❪ test drive: #1 - the overflow ❫

YOUR STORY BEGINS

The Storm came. You only remember darkness, but you don't remember much after that.

All you know, perhaps, is that it was cold as you slept. You don't know for how long you slept, but the dreams were short, at least. You remember the expanse of stars and the universe that came in view. Every world and solar system ever known was displayed in your dreams in careful, pristine detail. You have also witnessed The Storm, which has devoured a fair portion of these galaxies. It was a dark, thick smog; ominous in appearance and ever foreboding.

Your Earth and similar planets were immersed in The Storm. Somehow, you knew it would be the last you'd see of it. That was when she told you what happened, and how you can help. You knew that you'll be living somewhere new, even though you never asked for it. The details here weren't clear, but you knew you'd made a deal with Darma.

Not long after, you'll wake at Thesa Station — Your body is still cold.

It was all a dream, but somehow, you knew it wasn't — now, will you keep that promise you made to Darma?
PROMPT: THE MESS HALL

It's fascinating to the Orbiters how such a dull room can be turned around so completely with people in it. All meals are served by Roman, and while all the food is delicious, some of it is a bit odd. Is that neon green soup? That’s hideous.

If you happen to be in the mess hall at a particularly unlucky time, you and the food will suddenly begin to drift. Someone’s got jokes, and they’ve turned off the gravity control. Now it’s just you, your fellow refugees, and the floating sea of food. Wait, did that person just chuck a pie in your direction?
PROMPT: TRAINING MODULES

While it’s all nice and well to familiarize oneself with Thesa Station, it is most advised that new arrivals venture out a bit. Not physically. No one is quite prepared for that yet. However, there will be several virtual reality training programs set for those who dare to be adventurous. For those who aren’t and don’t dare, well— good luck, all the same. Be advised, however, that participating in one of the training modules will start you off favorably with the Natha Orbiters’ in terms of REPUTATION.

Once seated and appropriately strapped in, the system will automatically whir to life and the dense foliage and forestry of a section of El Nysa will open up. According to one’s map registry, it clear to see that it’s miles from the outer gates of Olympia, but not as far enough to venture into any other territories. So, in that sense, you’re safe.
  • 1. Or you could have been, but unfortunately the wilderness is home to various types of beasts and monsters hailing from different universes and galaxies. On the bright side, perhaps one of them will be oddly familiar to you. Or maybe someone else who is currently synced is willing to give you that extra helping hand.

Fortunately, if you’re powerless, there are options. From telekinesis to flight, there are strange abilities one can adopt and “test” out in the virtual reality. Granted, you’re only limited to one at a time. They say in the near future, some of you may be granted these abilities under certain conditions.

But, please practice some caution. You aren’t alone in the system, after all.

  • 2.. Who do you fight for, the VR system will ask you individually before you enter the module. The righteous Olympians, or the free-spirited Wyvers? Whatever your choice, when you enter El Nysa, you will wholly and truly believe your allegiance.
    • A. Working together: You now have to suffer the consequences of your choice, as you and your partner have been captured by guards of the opposite faction. Now jailed and soon-to-be tortured, you must find some way to negotiate your release. Perhaps you’ll find some means to escape without detection. Maybe you’re the “fight your way out” sort of people.

    • B. Facing your enemy: That person you stepped into the VR with? They’re out to capture you. Or maybe you seek to capture them.
  • 3. When you enter the virtual reality, things aren’t exactly how they’re supposed to be. Maybe that’s natural, especially if this is your first time, but the problems here seem a bit more fundamental. Maybe you find yourself under a parental safety lock, and you’re suddenly censored. Exposed back? Censored. Body suit? Censored. Or replaced with a mascot costume. Worst of all? You can’t sign out. Not right now, at least. Regardless, whatever it is— ridiculous filters, body alterations, or even body swaps with other users... you are assured it’ll all be fixed with due time. Zasere sends his humblest apologies and promises no more wire chewing, or so the announcement states.
PROMPT: STASIS UNIT

You have found the massive section of Thesa known as the Stasis Unit. There’s no special access required to access this part of Thesa Station, but refugees are warned that it may not be for the faint of heart. Here, in large pods that nearly cover every square inch of the space, are all of the people the Orbiters have managed to rescue. Your loved ones, your greatest enemy, your next door neighbor— you might find them here. These people are in a state of deep cryosleep. Due to the damaging effects of The Storm, their bodies are not yet ready to be awoken.

PROMPT: HANGAR STATION

You find your way to the hangar station. Here rests are a factory worth of docked mobile suits. You recall how the Orbiters had previously spoken of a "space frontier," but only after seeing this you realize how real their words are. Most machinery have marks of wear and tear, assurance that they have indeed been used before, and an assembly of others are going through repairs and maintenance. No one seems to care that you've just strolled in.

In fact, there seems to be a couple of the aircraft that beckon you to take a closer look. Maybe you’ll only look on the outside, maybe you'll be greeted by the hand of a mobile suit extending toward you and welcoming you to its cockpit.

You go out and explore SPACE!!! Unfortunately, that mobile suit should have warned you it only had 20 minutes of flight time left in its system. Or, perhaps, you’re a particularly ambitious pilot and you’ve strayed past the designated perimeter. Either way, the HUD display is now blinking with errors, cropping up with a single message: DISTRESS SIGNAL.

  • 1. You’re the poor sap who happened to chill around the Observation Deck. Unfortunately, everyone seems busy with the influx of mobile suits out and about, and the only one who can answer this distress signal is on the Navigation System, well, you. Hope you can figure out the controls fast enough. Guide the pilot back to the safety of the hangar using the most efficient route possible. Keen Navigators will find an instruction manual that provides a shortcut to automatically return a suit back to base.

  • 2. You’re actually sitting in a two-seater mobile suit. Funny how that works, isn’t it? Maybe you were unwittingly dropped down a hatch, or dragged along for a joyride by your ambitious co-pilot. Either way, it looks like help is going to take some time...
PROMPT: OMAGE
Upon receiving your mobile phone, you will be asked to set a username. Voila, you can now access the network! You can choose to send a message to the entire network, specific usernames, or you can try out the Orbiters’ service, Omage, which connects you to a random user. They thought this might be a good way for their new guests to make friends with each other...
Connecting to server...
Looking for someone you can chat with...
You’re now chatting with [username]... Say hi!

PROMPT: WILDCARD
You are welcome to write any scenarios in Thesa Station! Characters have been granted temporary access to the Observation Room, and are encouraged to study it carefully.

FINAL OOC NOTE
These threads may be carried over as game canon if players choose! Players are encouraged to submit TDM threads as application samples, but they are not required. Please direct any OOC questions to the questions thread below! A Training Module thread of AC length on the TDM may be submitted for 1 NATHA ORBITER REPUTATION POINT after acceptance.

TRAINING MODULE
Have you ever done anything like this before?

[She hasn't, and is pretty much relying on her training partner to help get things started. She's got a knife tucked in her boot, one like she used to carry back home. While there's plenty of other weapons she could practice using here, she opts for a crossbow. It's probably a little primitive compared to some of the other weapons here, but she doesn't have to worry about running out of ammo. Arrows can be grabbed and cleaned off and reused.

She's in the process of attempting to shift and properly carry the crossbow that looks too large for her, but wears a smile on her face as she glances over. This is all just virtual reality. Anything's possible here.

...anything including walkers that look like they came straight from her home. Sighing, she takes aim with her crossbow and fires. It hits one of the virtual zombies right between the eyes and she jumps in excitement.
]

STASIS UNIT
[Sitting on the ground in front of one of the stasis pods, Beth's got her knees pushed up close to her chest. Her head's resting on her knees and she's very obviously crying. She's trying to hide it because she's promised herself that she wouldn't cry anymore. But after everything she's been through she just can't help it. She's found her sister in one of the units here, and after being forcibly separated from her at the prison she wants nothing more than to have her come out so they can hug and reunite. Maggie's not ready yet though, so she feels emotion overcome her and her legs give out.

She spends long enough sitting on the floor crying that someone can find her. Or if someone wanders by later, she can be found slumped over up against the stasis unit asleep.
]

HANGAR STATION
[Distress signal?

So many things here are overwhelming to Beth after everything she's been through back home. But she takes as much as she can of it in stride, knowing that her family's likely still held in stasis and there's more for them than the ruined world they left behind. Seeing a distress signal so early on fills her with a sense of fear that rises like an urgent, smothering pain. It catches in her throat and she sucks in a breath, and holds it until she realizes that she's the one who's around and needs to take care of this. So she picks up the comm unit and glances over the screen and the materials around her.

Here goes nothing.
]

I'm not exactly trained to do this, but I'll help you, okay? We'll get you back to the hangar in one piece.

[The only problem is she isn't sure how just yet. She finds the instruction manual and starts to flip through it while she waits for a response.]

[The crackling voice over the comms is someone who sounds as though he should be older and wiser than to have taken an ungainly giant suit of armor out into the middle of space for god only knows what reason, but unfortunately only the former is true. Why oh why did he think this was a good idea?]

Oh sweet, sweet merciful angel. Guide me into your bosom.

[He can only assume that's the voice he's hearing. He is after all a fourteenth century man.]

livener: (It goes electric)

[personal profile] livener 2017-07-03 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[Well, that's a little unexpected. She can't deny that the response makes her want to laugh. It's not exactly appropriate to do so though, so she just cracks a hint of a smile instead.]

I'm not sure you want to be guided there, but here goes nothing.

[She looks over the digital map of the area up on one of the screens, and flips through a page or two in the manual.]

On your console, is there a flashing red button? I think it's a sign that the distress signal's been activated. Try turning the switch two down and one to the right. It should give you a chance to boot up the autopilot.

[At least get that started. She starts flipping through the manual faster in order to find the exact process how to do that. If they can't, she'll have to try and find some other kind of override.]
tummyflowers: (We agreed I would say the cool things!)

[personal profile] tummyflowers 2017-07-04 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
[He does feel distressed, so that's a start. Unfortunately he doesn't understand a word of what he's being told. Is this some strange godlike tongue.]

Well... yes, I mean, that does sound like tremendous and helpful advice. But, can we just go back a little bit to the whole... console thing. Assume I know nothing.
livener: (Nowhere to hide)

[personal profile] livener 2017-07-04 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
[Oh God. He's really in trouble.

She hesitates to say anything else because she really doesn't want him to notice that she's close to panic.
]

Okay, let's start with this. Is there a flashing red light anywhere in front of you? All those buttons and switches are on the console. I don't know what I'm doing either. But we'll...[Probably fail miserably.]

We'll figure it out.
tummyflowers: (I super believe in you)

[personal profile] tummyflowers 2017-07-04 11:22 am (UTC)(link)
[Are we panicking yet? Because Richard is feeling like maybe it's a good time to panic. There's a whole lot of nothing out there...]

Okay, I do believe I've pressed the red flashing light. That's good, yes? And... hmm, I see the number 30. Oh wait, now it.s 29- 28. 27. 26... [He'll keep going like that. It just keeps going lower.]
livener: (Default)

[personal profile] livener 2017-07-04 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
[It's probably a really good time to panic. Beth takes in a deep breath and tries very hard not to. She's got this. She's got this, she's -]

Okay, just...hold on. I'm trying something.

[She's not great with computers, but she's able to scroll through the command screen that shows which units are out right now. There's only one with a distress signal, so she clicks on it and tries to manually override things so it will just come straight back to the hangar on its own.]

Are the numbers still counting down?

[Please don't let it explode when it reaches zero.

She overrides the console unit with a simple click of a button and hopes it'll bring the unit back in toward safety. If not, she's just killed a man.
]
tummyflowers: (I'm such a bully!)

[personal profile] tummyflowers 2017-07-04 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, there goes the numbers. Pity, I wanted to see what it was counting down to.

[And the mech seems to have taken over itself. So that's something. Richard feels content to sit back and somehow manages to kick up his feet. Which, you know, is fine. Except that he cranked up the speed by ten, despite the autopilot maintaining its normal course.]

Hmm. I don't mean to alarm you, but it does seem like the whole big... well, whatever it is we were in- a floating castle perhaps? Well, anyway, it's getting bigger at a rather alarming rate.

stasis unit

[personal profile] twofates 2017-07-04 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Roman's been passing by the stasis units every morning and every night. Sometimes he'll just glance at his sister, sometimes he gets lost staring at her face, trapped in an assortment of memories, most of them bad, but some of them...really, really good. It's the good ones that generate a lot of turmoil. They never had a chance, their entire lives were manipulated by people trying to use them.

And then she'd lied and taken his control away, too. He wonders what could have happened if they'd just...been able to live normal lives together. He's thinking about that as he starts to walk away, but the sound of someone crying stops him in his tracks.

She's crying, and he should...do something about it, he thinks. Most people would. But what would they do? Would they ask her if she's okay, would they offer a touch - what's too little, or too much? He's still trying to learn what the normal thing to do is, what's acceptable.

Maybe she wouldn't want to talk at all. He ultimately decides to sit down on the floor next to her for now, knees drawn up to his chest. ]
livener: (don't need control)

[personal profile] livener 2017-07-04 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[The sound of his sitting beside her pulls her out of her own thoughts and emotions long enough to glance up and over his way. She tries to wipe at all the tears that are slipping down her cheeks, but ultimately decides that there's no point in trying to pretend that she hasn't been crying. So she smiles a little instead, halfhearted but still an attempt.]

Sorry if I was bothering you or anything. It's just hard seeing my sister this way.

[And when she's overcome with emotion, it's sometimes hard to ignore the fact that she's not the only one around. She's gotten better at not breaking down entirely in recent months, but she's still not immune to things like crying.]
twofates: (☯ 36)

[personal profile] twofates 2017-07-04 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Sister. That makes sense. It's also a connection they have, in a small way. He's not sure if it's hard seeing his own sister like this, though. He's thought a few times if he would trade places with Jane if he could. She'd certainly be more useful than him, he's always felt that way. Sometimes he wants to trade places with her for his own sake, not for her, which is...wrong. It's wrong, he knows it.

If she were here, though, she'd know how to comfort this girl better than he could. Just another way she would be more valuable than he would be. And yet, strangely, he's grateful to be here, to be awake, to be alive at all after what happened to their world. ]

You weren't bothering me.

[ He speaks softly, looking over at her. A few seconds pass by before he starts to think maybe he should say something else. ]

My sister's trapped, too.
livener: (I got this feeling inside my bones)

[personal profile] livener 2017-07-04 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry.

[Her response is equally quiet, but she realizes her mistake in saying it right away.]

It's a good thing that they've been saved and are here, but I wish they'd be ready to wake up too.

[It's better than nothing and she knows that, and she wants to be grateful. She is, on many levels. It's just the shock of seeing people she cares about frozen and trapped that wears on her.]

Do you know anyone else here? I haven't seen a familiar face since I woke up.
twofates: (☯ 13)

[personal profile] twofates 2017-07-04 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He can tell she's a caring person, just by the way she speaks to him. She tells him she's sorry when there's nothing about this that's even her fault. But she says it because she probably, on some level, cares a little. She's the kind of person who cares about strangers, and he finds that fascinating. ]

No. My sister was - is - all I have. She...always has been.

[ Internally, he has his own love/hate struggles to work out in regards to her, but one thing he does know is that he is grateful she was saved, that she has a chance. She may be sleeping still, but she's alive. And for now, at least, he has room to breathe. ]

You have other people? Family?
livener: (Nowhere to hide)

[personal profile] livener 2017-07-04 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I've got Maggie.

[She relaxes a little, letting one of her legs slip down to rest against the floor. Her smile is warmer when she looks back up and over at him. She's lost so many people recently that she sympathizes with his situation with his sister. While she always had a lot of people growing up, now that number has dwindled down to near no one.

His question makes her smile fade away, and her other leg flops down to rest beside the other as she shakes her head.
]

But she's still sleeping. Everyone else is too. I'm the only one awake.

[She's eighteen. Old enough to deal with things on her own. But she's got a gentle spirit and a kind heart, and she's just now starting to come into her own. She's got a long way to go, and hopes that she'll pick up on it now that she's here and has no one but herself to rely on.]

[ So her sister is, seemingly, one of her only anchors, one of the few things she has to hold onto. He can understand that, at least. It was always him and his sister against the world. Things changed so drastically and quickly, but that's how it was for them once. ]

Maggie. [ He nods a little, thinking it over. ]

What's she like?

[ He wonders what other sisters are like, other families. How they know they can count on each other. ]

( He's been in the modules a few times now and while he's getting the hang of it he knows he's a long way from being actually proficient. But Otabek is nothing but not determined and if this is his new reality, well, he'll make damn sure he's good at it. Not like he has anything else to do now (and really, it's kind of shitty knowing what you've spent the past ten years of your life working towards is just gone)

He shrugs a little at Beth's question. )

Been in here a couple times.

( He himself takes a crossbow of his own too and has a gun tucked into the back of his jeans. And when Beth takes out the zombie, Otabek glances to her with a slight raise of his brow. )

Have you done this before? ( He asks in accented English, a small curl of his lip upward before he spots another of the zombies and it takes three tries to get the same shot Beth had. )
