❪ test drive: #1 - the overflow ❫

YOUR STORY BEGINS

The Storm came. You only remember darkness, but you don't remember much after that.

All you know, perhaps, is that it was cold as you slept. You don't know for how long you slept, but the dreams were short, at least. You remember the expanse of stars and the universe that came in view. Every world and solar system ever known was displayed in your dreams in careful, pristine detail. You have also witnessed The Storm, which has devoured a fair portion of these galaxies. It was a dark, thick smog; ominous in appearance and ever foreboding.

Your Earth and similar planets were immersed in The Storm. Somehow, you knew it would be the last you'd see of it. That was when she told you what happened, and how you can help. You knew that you'll be living somewhere new, even though you never asked for it. The details here weren't clear, but you knew you'd made a deal with Darma.

Not long after, you'll wake at Thesa Station — Your body is still cold.

It was all a dream, but somehow, you knew it wasn't — now, will you keep that promise you made to Darma?
PROMPT: THE MESS HALL

It's fascinating to the Orbiters how such a dull room can be turned around so completely with people in it. All meals are served by Roman, and while all the food is delicious, some of it is a bit odd. Is that neon green soup? That’s hideous.

If you happen to be in the mess hall at a particularly unlucky time, you and the food will suddenly begin to drift. Someone’s got jokes, and they’ve turned off the gravity control. Now it’s just you, your fellow refugees, and the floating sea of food. Wait, did that person just chuck a pie in your direction?
PROMPT: TRAINING MODULES

While it’s all nice and well to familiarize oneself with Thesa Station, it is most advised that new arrivals venture out a bit. Not physically. No one is quite prepared for that yet. However, there will be several virtual reality training programs set for those who dare to be adventurous. For those who aren’t and don’t dare, well— good luck, all the same. Be advised, however, that participating in one of the training modules will start you off favorably with the Natha Orbiters’ in terms of REPUTATION.

Once seated and appropriately strapped in, the system will automatically whir to life and the dense foliage and forestry of a section of El Nysa will open up. According to one’s map registry, it clear to see that it’s miles from the outer gates of Olympia, but not as far enough to venture into any other territories. So, in that sense, you’re safe.
  • 1. Or you could have been, but unfortunately the wilderness is home to various types of beasts and monsters hailing from different universes and galaxies. On the bright side, perhaps one of them will be oddly familiar to you. Or maybe someone else who is currently synced is willing to give you that extra helping hand.

Fortunately, if you’re powerless, there are options. From telekinesis to flight, there are strange abilities one can adopt and “test” out in the virtual reality. Granted, you’re only limited to one at a time. They say in the near future, some of you may be granted these abilities under certain conditions.

But, please practice some caution. You aren’t alone in the system, after all.

  • 2.. Who do you fight for, the VR system will ask you individually before you enter the module. The righteous Olympians, or the free-spirited Wyvers? Whatever your choice, when you enter El Nysa, you will wholly and truly believe your allegiance.
    • A. Working together: You now have to suffer the consequences of your choice, as you and your partner have been captured by guards of the opposite faction. Now jailed and soon-to-be tortured, you must find some way to negotiate your release. Perhaps you’ll find some means to escape without detection. Maybe you’re the “fight your way out” sort of people.

    • B. Facing your enemy: That person you stepped into the VR with? They’re out to capture you. Or maybe you seek to capture them.
  • 3. When you enter the virtual reality, things aren’t exactly how they’re supposed to be. Maybe that’s natural, especially if this is your first time, but the problems here seem a bit more fundamental. Maybe you find yourself under a parental safety lock, and you’re suddenly censored. Exposed back? Censored. Body suit? Censored. Or replaced with a mascot costume. Worst of all? You can’t sign out. Not right now, at least. Regardless, whatever it is— ridiculous filters, body alterations, or even body swaps with other users... you are assured it’ll all be fixed with due time. Zasere sends his humblest apologies and promises no more wire chewing, or so the announcement states.
PROMPT: STASIS UNIT

You have found the massive section of Thesa known as the Stasis Unit. There’s no special access required to access this part of Thesa Station, but refugees are warned that it may not be for the faint of heart. Here, in large pods that nearly cover every square inch of the space, are all of the people the Orbiters have managed to rescue. Your loved ones, your greatest enemy, your next door neighbor— you might find them here. These people are in a state of deep cryosleep. Due to the damaging effects of The Storm, their bodies are not yet ready to be awoken.

PROMPT: HANGAR STATION

You find your way to the hangar station. Here rests are a factory worth of docked mobile suits. You recall how the Orbiters had previously spoken of a "space frontier," but only after seeing this you realize how real their words are. Most machinery have marks of wear and tear, assurance that they have indeed been used before, and an assembly of others are going through repairs and maintenance. No one seems to care that you've just strolled in.

In fact, there seems to be a couple of the aircraft that beckon you to take a closer look. Maybe you’ll only look on the outside, maybe you'll be greeted by the hand of a mobile suit extending toward you and welcoming you to its cockpit.

You go out and explore SPACE!!! Unfortunately, that mobile suit should have warned you it only had 20 minutes of flight time left in its system. Or, perhaps, you’re a particularly ambitious pilot and you’ve strayed past the designated perimeter. Either way, the HUD display is now blinking with errors, cropping up with a single message: DISTRESS SIGNAL.

  • 1. You’re the poor sap who happened to chill around the Observation Deck. Unfortunately, everyone seems busy with the influx of mobile suits out and about, and the only one who can answer this distress signal is on the Navigation System, well, you. Hope you can figure out the controls fast enough. Guide the pilot back to the safety of the hangar using the most efficient route possible. Keen Navigators will find an instruction manual that provides a shortcut to automatically return a suit back to base.

  • 2. You’re actually sitting in a two-seater mobile suit. Funny how that works, isn’t it? Maybe you were unwittingly dropped down a hatch, or dragged along for a joyride by your ambitious co-pilot. Either way, it looks like help is going to take some time...
PROMPT: OMAGE
Upon receiving your mobile phone, you will be asked to set a username. Voila, you can now access the network! You can choose to send a message to the entire network, specific usernames, or you can try out the Orbiters’ service, Omage, which connects you to a random user. They thought this might be a good way for their new guests to make friends with each other...

a. MESS HALL

[ there's a tiny woman sitting on her own at a table as far away from other people as the room's layout allows. she's not eating anything, she's not drinking anything. there's no signs of her having done so already. and if you get close enough to tell, she looks... bad. maybe it's these lights, or maybe the lights are just stark enough that there's nowhere to hide— underneath the huge dark shades she's wearing and the jacket, her skin looks pallid, a murky off-grey. hair lank. mouth curled down at the corners - maybe that's just her face.

it looks like she's gone out of her way to avoid attention, but if she catches you looking she will look back. eyes lost behind those shades, brow a little pinched, it's an expression that says what the fuck are you looking at without her having to open her mouth.

well? what the fuck are you looking at?

otherwise, she's just a small sick-looking woman hunched over the table, not eating, casting furtive glances out over the room every now and then. is she okay? ]

b. TRAINING MODULE (tw: gore)

[ just logging in? ho boy did you ever get spawned in an interesting location. namely, in this case, the middle of a forested area in which the keening scream of some kind of creature careening away through the underbrush is really nothing compared to what you're looking at right now.

namely: a small lake of blood, bone, flesh, all scattered about in a perimeter. dripping off trees, hanging over vines. sometimes recognisable as some specific part of something that was living once, sometimes not.

and in the middle of it all, standing there covered head to foot in gore, a 5ft, unarmed woman.

uhm? ]

( There's an answer she has already, a bit adjusted for Ana's response, but her conviction is strong. After all she's here, now, when she should be dead--and it does occur to Mercy, obliquely, that if that's true, then something isn't quite right. Ana, the woman whom she looked up to, was never flappable, but being brought back from the dead is something remarkable. )

You're here. Isn't that a good place... ( To start, she means to say, but her response now dies and she begins to mentally readjust for whatever it is now visible before her. Even if nothing really makes sense in this situation, Mercy can't understand what she's seeing when she sees the older woman's face, her hair. Mercy's brow knits and her smile fails her. ) Ana, what's happened to you? You were--younger, when you died.

[ It's still so strange to have him not know. Everything that happened with Klaus and the curse, Jenna and John dying. The entire mess that had been the last few months with the Mikaelsons and what had been done to Ric. It's all so overwhelming and she's not sure she can even begin to explain it to him, or that she should really even try, for much the same reason she shouldn't tell him about his own death. It hurts for her to think about keeping all of this from him, but would it make things any better for him to know? Maybe, but maybe not.

She winces slightly at the way he has to support himself against the pods, connecting her own dots to understand where his thoughts were likely taking him. They'd all tried for so long to keep her alive, him especially, and now to hear that there had been an instance when it didn't work-- And then he confirms that's what he's thinking, and the anger in those words makes her heart ache like there's a hand wrapped around it. ]

Damon, it wasn't Klaus. Well-- I mean, I did die then, technically, but that wasn't when I turned. It was months after that.

[ Because that makes it better. The next part's hard for her to say, the memories of that night and the following days still some of the hardest for her. She still dreams about it sometimes, that night and the night with her parents. She probably always will. ]

I was driving with Matt and Rebekah was suddenly in the road and... The truck went off Wickery Bridge. I drowned.

[As a Shadowhunter, seeing gruesome sights very much comes with the territory. Fighting demons for a living is in no way a pretty sight to behold. It usually involves a lot of stabbing, a lot of blood, and more often then not getting covered in unusual substances that you really don't want to identify.

So Alec's reaction to logging into the module and finding the bloody sight before him? Pretty underwhelming actually. Even the size of the woman doesn't much surprise him, seeing as he's grown up watching the women around him take down demons more than half their size.

If anything, he's a little irritated the woman hadn't left anything for him to fight.]

Apparently I should have come sooner.

The rest of us find it useful to record our knowledge in these things called books, when powerful magical artifacts are unavailable. [ Teasing, again. ] It may only be useful to you in the end, but it's important to remember where one comes from, especially when circumstances force you to live far from home.

And if you're going to make enticing offers like that... I only ask that you keep this to yourself for now. [ She glances around to be sure that no one is paying attention, then unfastens her mask from the hood that she wears. There's nothing particularly shocking underneath - just an old woman. She fusses her hair back into place, and re-tucks it under her scarf, out of habit. It's nice to be out of the that mask. She doesn't know how Jack does this all of the time. ]

I told you I go by Shrike, and that was true, but my real name is Ana. Ana Amari. The mask is to hide my identity. I'm - well, how do I put this? Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.

They're rather boring, don't you think? I can think of at three other countries where those names are just as common. It's nice to have some name diversity; sometimes when you've had to work a triple shift, John A. might just start to seem like John B., even though they are very different people.

More like a codename, from when I was a member of Overwatch.

a; training module

[The training module is by far the most interesting aspect of the Thesa Station for Alec. It's a way for him to keep up his training, if only virtually, and it gives glimpses of what the planet they'll all be living on holds in store. His cooperation comes grudgingly, but he still wants to be prepared for anything.

Right now anything means traipsing through the wilderness with his bow in one hand and his arrows stored over his shoulder. He moves silently between the trees, his senses open to the area around him; he's listening. Failing to hear the approach of an enemy can quickly turn a hunter into the hunted.

Which is why he doesn't appreciate all the noise his training partner is making. Maybe you're humming under your breath, or just walking extremely loudly. Whatever it is, you need to stop it right now.]

Are you always this noisy? [His tone is flat with a hint of sarcasm.] Maybe you should rethink this.

b; hangar station

[Why had he thought learning to co-pilot a mobile suit would be fun? Oh, right, because he was convinced by his co-pilot that it would be cool. Another asset he could use in his arsenal of abilities. It would be a good way to bond.

And then he'd been further convinced that driving just a little bit past their designated perimeter would be a good idea.

Now he's staring down his co-pilot with his best "what the hell did you do" glare.]

I'm never listening to you again.

[Abelas likewise lifted his hands to remove his hood, revealing his odd colored hair, and pointed ears. Even if she was unfamiliar as to what he was, he assumed it was enough to mark him as not being human.

When he sees her face however, his eyes go wide.
]

You are... merely another human?

[He was quick to replace his hood, casting paranoid glances around the room to see if any had noticed him. Of course it had been misplaced kinship that lead him to be so loose-lipped, but this was just a human. One of the same childish beasts that assaulted his temple over and over for naught but power.

Even so, he made a bargain of sorts. He had to follow through. She was human but she was... an honorable sort. He had to try and put his very limited faith in the species in that. She was her own person, and thus far had done nothing to betray his trust.
]

I shall keep this knowledge to myself, milady, as I trust you shall do the same. I mean no offense to you [And only her. Other humans could go be offended.], but I have found that your kind do not much care for those different from themselves.

Even so, shifting to stand on all fours, the idea of hibernating, unforgiving evil—entities that certainly do not deserve another chance—is enough to make her shake herself out. Again, she's trying to get nearer, but if he moves in any form that shows he won't allow it, startles, any of that, she'll sit down and wait patiently.

If he lets her, she might be able to pick up scent of a number of people he's looking for, anyone he's touched last or was touched by, and she can help him search. But even if not, if he moves to continue what he's doing, she'll follow, keeping a short distance away since it isn't in her interest to scare him off, but almost obnoxiously nurturing in her demeanor. There's a bunch of people I wouldn't give a second chance. [Somehow, it's less her demeanor and more the fact that she's speaking to him without words that makes the tension ease out of him. He trusts animals better than he trusts people. He doesn't necessarily like them, because they're not smart enough to hold a conversation, but he knows that they're pretty simple. If they don't chase you immediately, they're probably not going to. If they don't look at you like you're food, they probably don't want to eat you. No ulterior motives. No sticking knives-literally or metaphorically- into your back.

So she gets up on all fours like that, and he doesn't step forward, but he doesn't step back- just holds his hands up as kind of a "easy I'm not going for my gun or anything" gesture.

He figures it's only fair that he show he's not a threat either, but it's more for his own benefit than hers. Cybernetics or not, mom those are some big teeth you have, but he's too proud to sit back and think his guns are no match for them .]

It's not that he's necessarily struggling for words, he's just...thinking about what the other man has said, about being a specimen, something on display, and he's right.

It's a feeling he's all too familiar with, and unfortunately, he lets his thoughts run away - a little too far away - before he has the good sense to actually speak again. When he does, there's a faint lifting of the corner of his lips and he shakes his head. ]
