❪ test drive #4 ❫
YOUR STORY BEGINS ![]() The Storm came. You only remember darkness, but you don't remember much after that. All you know, perhaps, is that it was cold. You don't know for how long you slept, but the dreams were short, at least. You remember the expanse of stars and the universe that came in view. Every world and solar system ever known was displayed in your dreams in careful, pristine detail. You have also witnessed The Storm, which has devoured a fair portion of these galaxies. It was a dark, thick smog — ominous in appearance and ever foreboding. Your Earth and similar planets were immersed in The Storm. Somehow, you knew it would be the last you'd see of it. That was when she told you what happened, and how you could help. You knew that you'd be living somewhere new, even though you never asked for it. The details here weren't clear, but you knew you'd made a deal with Darma. Not long after, you'll wake at Thesa Station — your body is still cold. It all felt like a dream, but somehow, you knew it wasn't — now, will you keep that promise you made to Darma? PROMPT: THE STORM ![]() CW: death You were awake on Thesa Station. But at some point you, like many other new arrivals before you, wandered into the Observation Deck. Ordinarily, this is where images of The Storm are replayed to remind Refugees of the fate they have escaped. The Natha Orbiters' technology has evolved. They are aware of your gaps in memory. You may have doubts of The Storm even existing, or of your world's destruction. Though they do not wish reliving those last moments on anyone, they have created an experience that will do just that. Before entering the Observation Deck, you are warned that what follows will not be for the weak of heart. As soon as you step in, you will find that the walls around you begin to transform and expand. Welcome to the Planet Cespi, in the Circinus Galaxy. Unfortunately, we were not able to save this world from The Storm's Consumption.
These are its last memories. You are surrounded by blue, grassy hills as far as the eye can see and a pleasant breeze. The atmosphere is thick with a sickly sweet smell. Before you lays the scene of a quiet village, with its residents going about their everyday lives. You aren't alone, either, with an equally confused stranger (or perhaps you know each other?) surveying the scene. Then the world grows completely silent for a full minute. You and your partner are unable to make a sound, verbal or otherwise. Without warning, a deafening roar fills your ears and forces you to double over in pain. The villagers run out of their homes in a panic, finding themselves in just as much pain and confusion as you do. Where there was no sound before, now there is too much for a normal human body to process. Look up. An expanding mass of energy is swallowing everything you can see. It consumes the earth, the atmosphere, the depths of space — and it is getting closer. Your only hope is to outrun it, if you can. The people in the village certainly try to, racing past you. Their fear is very real. Their bodies are very real. You may be able to run from it for a time, only able to catch glimpses of this dark and sinister force swallowing everything and everyone. The earth rumbles and separates beneath you. Electricity surges through the sky, and then through your very body. You fought hard, but it is impossible to outrun the Storm forever. You too will be consumed. Your death is quick, but not painless. What were you thinking, before you took your last breath? You awaken back in the Observation Deck, next to your new friend. PROMPT: TRAINING MODULES ![]() While it’s all nice and well to familiarize oneself with Thesa Station, it is most advised that new arrivals venture out a bit. Not physically. No one is quite prepared for that yet. However, there will be several virtual reality training programs set for those who dare to be adventurous. For those who aren’t and don’t dare, well — good luck, all the same. Once seated and appropriately strapped in, the system will automatically whir to life. 1. When you enter the Natha's newest program, at first nothing loads. You might think this is an error as you look around in apparent total darkness, only able to see your own virtual body if you look down, but soon enough a voice comes to life as if speakers have turned on somewhere. Long ago, the lands of El Nysa were dominated by the ancestors of the dragons who now live among the people, tamed. It was pretty dangerous! How about a little history lesson? And then the simulation comes to life—
2. Let us now travel forward in time, shall we? ![]() a. The Olympian settlement around you is quiet — until the screaming starts.3. And now, the present. ![]() After all those enlightening scenes, the simulation finally brings you to a more quiet area of Olympia. You are deposited out somewhere in The Outlook, a place the very first group of refugees had to trudge through before they found their homes. You've arrived in the early evening — but sunlight is waning, and soon you'll be under a sky full of stars. Luckily, their old campsites aren't too overgrown. The intention here is to get you familiar with some of the local flora and fauna. What sorts of plants will you encounter? Do you find yourself under a Verillum Tree, suddenly compelled to be painfully honest and truthful in conversation with a complete stranger? Find yourself behaving erratically in the presence of Whistleweed? Or perhaps you'll have to break the spell of being trapped in a Vena Amoris' vines... with a kiss. PROMPT: STASIS UNIT ![]() You have found the massive section of Thesa known as the Stasis Unit. There’s no special access required to enter this part of Thesa Station, but refugees are warned that it may not be for the faint of heart. Here, in large pods that nearly cover every square inch of the space, are all of the people the Orbiters have managed to rescue. Your loved ones, your greatest enemy, your next door neighbor — you might find them here. These people are in a state of deep cryosleep. Due to the damaging effects of The Storm, their bodies are not yet ready to be awoken. PROMPT: OMAGE
Upon receiving your mobile phone, you will be asked to set a username. Voila, you can now access the network! You can choose to send a message to the entire network, specific usernames, or you can try out the Orbiters’ service, Omage, which connects you to a random user. They thought this might be a good way for their new guests to make friends with each other...
Connecting to server... PROMPT: WILDCARD
You are welcome to write any scenarios in Thesa Station! Characters have been granted temporary access to the Observation Room, and are encouraged to study it carefully.

I'm sure you won't! :3
There are more important things to discuss than his hair of all things though, so Riku focuses on those rather than to waste more time on Sora's strange obsession.
He turns, hands disappearing into the pockets of his coat to hide away how they clench as he answers.]
Ah. Donald and Goofy too.
[He knows, he's found them sleeping after all – them and the King and at least two thirds of the Organization… even some who are supposed to be dead; and just the thought of them makes him think of the unfairness of it, of the fact that Zexion is alive and sleeping while his parents and Sora's and Kairi's are nowhere to be found.
He exhales slowly, letting the tension seep out of his body. He needs to tell Sora about this, he knows. But not now. Not when he's only just arrived. It's better to lead with the good news after all.]
It's not far from here.
I've got to admit I've been stalking from afar and this is like, super lastminute.com test driving!!
Being lost to nothingness... to the dark... it's something he swears he won't let anyone he cares about have to go through.]
Okay.
[But the hair's still nagging him. And- when did he get the coat back? He thought they'd seen the last of that in the Castle That Never Was.
And the hair!
No, this is definitely weird. Sora stops and hangs back, looking at Riku strangely.]
Riku... why are you wearing the coat again?
no subject
(And isn't that the greatest lie of all, because Riku will always choose the hard way for himself, will rather prefer to face the truth of things and stay awake, rather than to sleep in ignorance… but that doesn't mean he can't wish that sleep for Sora, for Kairi… because DiZ was right about one thing: Sleep is safety and there is nothing Riku wants more than for Sora and Kairi to be safe.)
Sora provides him with a good reason to break away from those musings though, gives him something else to focus on and earns himself another frown:]
What do you mean by 'again'? I've been wearing it for over a year.
[Not that he doesn't take it off every now and then, but most of the time he feels comfortable with the protection it provides… from the Darkness and from other magical influences. It's maybe not as sturdy as Terra's armor, but it's definitely not as heavy either… and Riku has always been more of a speedy fighter anyway.]
of all the times to get a gross pukey tummy bug from my little nephew, I'm so sorry!
[Sora looks vaguely horrified and gives his friend another good, long, hard look. This is definitely weird. If he'd been wearing it for a year then that would explain why his hair's got so long again, but- why would he go back to the coat. And wouldn't he be taller still? ]
You mean I've been asleep in there for a whole year? Geez, I've got to stop doing that! And after you went to all that trouble to wake me up, too.
[It's probably not good for him to be sleeping so much, maybe it'll stunt his growth. But- oh wow, wait a second. If he's been out for a whole year... oh that's not good. That's really not good.
Master Xehanort outnumbered them as it was, even though they'd managed to hold him off from getting his hands on another vessel (and Sora still gets the heebie-jeebies just thinking about what would have happened if he'd succeeded), that didn't make him any less dangerous. They were going to have to do all sorts of dangerous things just to try and level the playing field and to be down a Keybearer for a year-
Oh no.
The storm. Devouring worlds. Sora's lived through all this before, it just had another name.]
Wait, what about Xehanort? Riku, you don't think he could have something to do with all this do you?
no subject
A year back home, and at least five months in here.
[At least that's the time that Riku can vouch for. How long they've been here before he's woken himself… he doesn't even want to think about it.]
But yea… you really ought to stop doing that. I might not always be around to wait till you wake.
[In spite of the fact that the words are not voiced unkindly, that there's a hint of teasing in Riku's voice, he nearly flinches the second after the words leave his mouth. For one, he wouldn't be around if it hadn't been for the Storm… he certainly hadn't planned to be at home, not knowing what it would take to bring Roxas in.
This? This is kind of a miracle, and there are so many reasons why Riku doesn't deserve to make light of it... and why teasing Sora in general might be off limits for him too.
Sora's next question snap him out of that train of thought though, confusion returning to settle on his face because…]
…Who is Xehanort?
no subject
Wait a minute.
What Riku says causes Sora's jaw to drop in open disbelief. How could he ask something as outrageous as that? They're at war with him, every hardship that has befallen them and their world and all the other worlds they've helped, Xehanort's had a hand in it. He's tried to rip their friendship apart, tore them away from Kairi for so, so long and Riku's looking at him like he doesn't have a clue what he's talking about- he assumes, it's hard to tell with the blindfold.]
Who's Xehanort? Did you hit your head or something, how can you not know who Xehanort is?!
[Wait. Something's beginning to fall into place here.
Riku I'm afraid he's been thinking. (A dangerous past time, I know.)
The coat. The blindfold. The gaps in Riku's knowledge. It's all so... wrong. This isn't the sort of joke Riku would play, especially not when Xehanort's involved.]
...Riku, when did we last speak to each other before you found me here?
no subject
So instead of quipping, he decides to answer the question… it's fairly easy and this is a thing that Sora should remember, he's sure.]
When we closed the Door… I told you to take care of Kairi. Then, when I found you next, you were already taking your nap in Castle Oblivion.
[…Okay, maybe there's a little quipping after all, but honestly… Sora deserves to be teased about that one.]
no subject
But that... that was over a year ago. I woke up, and me and Donald and Goofy, we looked everywhere for you and we found you! We fought the Organization, you and me we beat Xemnas and we went home, all of us.
[He takes a hesitant step towards his friend.]
You... you really don't remember that? And the Mark of Mastery exam?
no subject
Finally he just shakes his head – he truly doesn't know what Sora is talking about (going home seems like a pipe dream, one he doesn't even dare hoping to become true because of the things he's done, and the ones that he just might have to do. And what is a Mark of Mastery exam?)]
…The last thing I remember from home is waiting for Roxas in the World That Never Was.
no subject
[And if that was the last thing Riku remembered before being taken here and then the world was destroyed then how could they have all been reunited? How could that happen if the Storm was going to descend upon the worlds, wouldn't everything Sora remembered have not happened?
And he remembers - well, Roxas remembered - that fight. He knows why Riku did what he did, he doesn't blame him. He understands.
His chest still hurts thinking about it, though.]
I don't get it. I know what happened was real, you were there, and Kairi and Donald and Goofy and Mickey, they were all there! How can that have happened if the Storm came and we all got saved before I even woke up?
no subject
Still, Riku has the advantage of knowing some things about how this world works… so the only way he can explain it.]
Maybe the Storm didn't come then… maybe it came in your time and the Natha just didn't manage to keep my knowledge of it intact.
[His knowledge, his memories… his powers too probably, because if he really went home with Sora and Kairi (and goodness, he can't even dare to think that, dare to hope)… he wouldn't have gone if Ansem's Darkness still was an issue, he knows this for sure.
He wants to ask what he did, what his future self did to deal with Ansem's power, to escape the fate that Riku had thought near certain until now, but he swallows the question. It doesn't matter now.]
There is a guy here, someone that I met when I was five. He was pretty surprised to meet me like this… it had only been a few weeks for him since then at most. Until now we thought the Storm just had sparred the worlds outside the one he was at, but all things considered, maybe he just doesn't remember what happened after either…
no subject
[Sora doesn't like the sound of that. Memories are precious things and having them interfered with... well it leads to all kinds of trouble.]
But if that's true... wouldn't you look like you did at Yen Sid's?
[If what Riku's saying is right, if there are gaps in his knowledge, then it still doesn't make sense. If the Storm had come from his time, then why doesn't Riku look the same? Why isn't his hair shorter?
Wouldn't he be able to feel that he doesn't need to wear that coat and blindfold anymore?
Riku breaks his train of thought with another new revelation and Sora wonders where he's going with this.]
Someone from long ago? Well who is he, did I meet him too? What's his name?
no subject
[Cue shrugging because honestly nothing of this makes much sense to Riku either. He just tries to roll with it best that he can.]
You didn't meet back then, but his name is Terra. He's a Keyblade bearer.
no subject
[If there are enough of them, maybe they can stand a chance. Maybe there's something the Keyblade can do to help stop the Storm.
...Well. There must be otherwise they wouldn't be there.
But then something registers, the other Keyblade bearer's name.]
Terra?
[Why does that name seem... familiar?]
no subject
Two of you.
[After all, it takes a Keyblade to be a Keyblade bearer… and ability to wield it or not, Riku won't let himself count without one. But anyway…]
I've seen Mickey; he is sleeping here. And who's Lea?
no subject
[Sora says it completely matter of factly, not even stopping to register that Riku might not have his Keyblade yet. He looks around at the pods around them.]
Oh, Lea's Axel, except he's called Lea now he's got his heart back. Hey, aren't we going to see Kairi?
no subject
Sora… it takes a Keyblade to be a Keyblade Wielder.
[Which only makes this more confusing. Like, Axel got his Heart back? Also, there'd be four of them if Kairi wakes? Wait what?]
Why would Axel and Kairi have Keyblades anyway?
[Was there a Keyblade sale somewhere that he'd missed out?]
no subject
[Kingdom Key materialises in his hand, and Sora does his level best to try and imitate Riku's stance with Way to the Dawn... and it looks ridiculous. His Keyblade is just not meant to be carried like that.
...which he realises about five seconds later and laughs, lowering it to his side as he rubs the back of his neck awkwardly.]
And you gave Kairi her Keyblade! But I have no idea where Axel got his from, come to think of it, he doesn't have the hang of it yet, he can't get the summoning part right. But he's gonna learn! He's one of us now.
no subject
Don't hurt yourself.
[As for him having a Keyblade...]
And no, I don't.
[He lifts his hand and summons the Soul Eater, showing it off to Sora before dismissing it again. His point has been made.
Frowning worriedly, he takes a step towards Sora. He can more than roll with Kairi ending up with a Keyblade, her Heart is strong and even brighter than Sora's and honestly, Kairi isn't the type to stay put while there is some way for her to help her friends… so this isn't really surprising. Axel though, who's a wild card even on his best days… to think that he's become an ally just like that? And well… there's precedence of Sora having his Heart and memories messed with before, even if Sora himself doesn't have any memory of it.]
You sure, you are all right?
no subject
[That's not Riku's Keyblade. It's Soul Eater. But... but...]
Am I alright? Don't you mean are you alright, Riku, your Keyblade!
[Time conundrums are really, really going to take some getting used to apparently. If Sora were to stop and think about this, he'd get it already... but when has Sora every really stopped to think about things?]
This is too weird, there's gotta be a way we can fix things!
no subject
I don't have a Keyblade.
[This has been his point the whole time, even if he can't add that he's never had one, not given the five hot seconds that he had held the Kingdom Key… and well, better not to mention the Keyblade of People's Hearts. Neither of that matters right now.]
And yes, I'm fine.
[He isn't the one talking about how a sometimes!enemy is suddenly Keyblade-worthy and an ally. (Granted okay, he's got some Heart-trouble that he'd rather not talk about, but that's his business, thank you).
Finally he just lifts his hand to rub his fingers over the bridge of his nose. This whole time conundrum is giving him a headache.]
Let's just go see Kairi.
[Tiny steps, and maybe then they can get to the bottom of this.]
no subject
[Riku sounds tired, and that tone of voice and the general weariness in his posture strikes a chord with Sora. He's not seem him look so down on himself since... well. Since The World That Never Was, when he wasn't even himself.
He should let it go. If Riku doesn't believe him then that's fine, Sora's just going to have to find a way for Riku to prove it to himself that he has a Keyblade, that he's a Keyblade Master. Even right now, when nothing makes sense and Sora doesn't know what to believe, he has to believe in Riku.]
You do.
[His voice is small, and not meant to be heard as he looks at his friend's back. But he squashes that down, bundles it up and then throws himself back into being upbeat. There's no use in both of them being downbeat, and he throws an arm over Riku's shoulder, giving his friend a reassuring half hug.]
You know, I bet she's going to be real surprised I woke up before she did. We'll show her who's the lazy bum around here!
no subject
Riku picks up on that whisper, hands clenching as he forces himself not to look at Sora – this all would be so much easier if Sora was at least a little mad at him, if he wasn't so damn certain in his confidence in Riku… especially when it's so inevitable that he will be let down sooner or later.
He tenses under Sora's hug before he allows himself to relax again, and by the light, it shouldn't be so easy for him fall into step, to have a quip on his tongue before he can give it much thought.]
Oh, that's always been the both of you. I try so hard to be a role model, but in the end that just means I get to do all the work.
[Case in point, the raft that never ended up setting sails. Or the last five months.
(And it's also a lie, because honestly… what about what Riku has been doing back home in the last year and a half has been anywhere near role model worthy?)]
no subject
[Is that a soft punch in your arm Riku? It just might be. It doesn't mean that he's wrong though, and Sora's not afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve and tell his best friend just how much he admires him, how proud of him he is, how he hopes that one day he'll be as strong as he is to have gone through everything he has and come out of it stronger and wiser than any of them could have foreseen when they were small.]
Just you wait, I'll catch up with you in no time, and then Kairi will too when she wakes up and the three of us will be unstoppable.
no subject
He can't help but tilt his head a little at Sora's words though, as though they don't quite make sense to him (and really they don't, because)...]
Catch up to me?
[Despite his joke just now, it's not like there is anything with him to catch up to. …Unless Sora means his skill with the Darkness, which Riku honestly doubts.]
