❪ test drive: #2 ❫ THE OVERFLOW
THE PROLOGUE There is urgency in the Orbiters' request. Refugees currently in El Nysa are asked via mass message to please return to Thesa Station virtual reality area immediately. Zasere tells them that the next set of Refugees are scheduled to wake, but there's been an issue. On Thesa, refugees will find that the people in stasis are still apparently trapped in slumber. Most of them are complete strangers, but there's a chance you may recognize a familiar face or two. Normally, these people would wake up from their pods without issue, but due to a malfunction caused by the unforeseen force during The Descent, they have to go through extra measures to make this possible. Those in slumber require extra stimulation, something to keep their minds active. What better than a simulation of an area of El Nysa? Keeping their minds active requires an extremely involved simulation. Those subjected to the VR (prospective characters) will find themselves completely immersed in their new environment, believing themselves to be native Olympians. To wake up from the simulation, characters must work together to accomplish a certain objective(s) in the icy tundra. Characters in-game will be aware that this is a simulation, but this is good practice for properly interacting with El Nysa natives, isn't it? PROMPT: WINTER CAME ![]() The wind in the icy wasteland is bitter and frigid. You are wrapped up in a winter coat, but even still, the cold bites at your skin and leaves you yearning for a warm fire. Perhaps you're a merchant from the city, here to make a delivery, or you're a royal guard, sent to patrol the area. Who are you? The sky is the limit. One thing is certain — you won't snap out of your new identity until you finish a task. 1. Due to the vast diversity of the creatures on El Nysa and the fact that new ones are constantly being discovered, an important objective is to carefully chronicle different species. Unfortunately, to research these new species, they happen to need more than just a visual. More than just fleeting glances in over a snowy hill. Researchers are constantly looking for ways to secure... ![]() 3. You are stuck in a dilemma. On one hand, you are set to work for Olympia. One the other, you're not completely sure what is really expected of you, or who the man who gave you this mission truly is.When you come to, you will awaken in Thesa Station. All will be explained to you by Zasere or Sael via telepathic link. Your world is no more. The Storm has consumed it. We offer proof in the Observation Deck if you desire it, but it won't be an easy thing to stomach. We offer you a new life, in our planet of El Nysa. We just ask for your help in maintaining the vitality of El Nysa. What can we offer you in exchange for your help? PROMPT: STASIS UNIT ![]() You have found the massive section of Thesa known as the Stasis Unit. There’s no special access required to access this part of Thesa Station, but refugees are warned that it may not be for the faint of heart. Here, in large pods that nearly cover every square inch of the space, are all of the people the Orbiters have managed to rescue. Your loved ones, your greatest enemy, your next door neighbor— you might find them here. These people are in a state of deep cryosleep. Due to the damaging effects of The Storm, their bodies are not yet ready to be awoken. PROMPT: GET REKT ![]() The Orbiters have noticed that some of the refugees really miss their video games. The technology in El Nysa could be much worse, but it definitely leaves much to be desired. Which is why, after expressing relief that everyone awoke safely, the Orbiters have decided to provide a little fun in the form of video game competitions. Anything from old-timey arcade machines to state-of-the-art computers, consoles, and VR headsets (though you may be a little tired of VR right now...) is available, and yes, they have your favorite games! Enjoy PAC-MAN, Starcraft 2, or perhaps Dance Dance Revolution! Teach a friend how to play. Get unnecessarily angry and competitive. Most importantly, have fun. Keep fourthwalling to a minimum, please. Recommended playing: QWOP PROMPT: OMAGE
Upon receiving your mobile phone, you will be asked to set a username. Voila, you can now access the network! You can choose to send a message to the entire network, specific usernames, or you can try out the Orbiters’ service, Omage, which connects you to a random user. They thought this might be a good way for their new guests to make friends with each other...
Connecting to server... PROMPT: WILDCARD
You are welcome to write any scenarios in Thesa Station! Characters have been granted temporary access to the Observation Room, and are encouraged to study it carefully.
FINAL OOC NOTE
Please give toplevel priority to prospective characters! Current characters wishing to thread these scenarios with other current characters are encouraged to create separate logs. However, threads between 2 current characters are not eligible for Natha Orbiter REP.
These threads may be carried over as game canon if players choose! Players are encouraged to submit TDM threads as application samples, but they are not required. Please direct any OOC questions to the questions thread below! A TDM thread of AC length may be submitted HERE for 2 NATHA ORBITER REPUTATION POINTS. Current players may submit their thread at any time, and prospective players may submit a thread after acceptance. Please note that threads must contain at least five (5) log comments from your character. A toplevel counts as a comment. Network threads are not eligible.

his body heat rising in light of his movements. though, of course, as cain requests— ] That way? [ he gives a firm nod. if anything, as much as cain may have swept his knowledge under the rug— whether on purpose or not, vane had comprehension to the fact that he was... a pretty amazing person. then again, anyone who could keep level-headed in the face of trial and tribulation had to be.
but, he was clever even outside of that. a verdict that vane could easily come to. at any rate, his feet begin moving: ] Aye, aye! Full speed ahead! [ and it seems that cain may have been on the right track. there's even a cloth or something that may have been left by another traveler moments before them. ]
Look! [ he shakes some snow out of his hair as he leans down to pick it up. it's ... a jerky of some sort?
is it still edible? he ... smells it. ]
no subject
Let's hope that means there's shelter and a cache ahead. [ He feels compelled out of pragmatism to add: ] And that finding that out here means no wild animals have broken into the stores.
[ But full speed ahead it is! Getting out of the cold is a welcome prospect, and Cain's quite happy to match Vane's quick steps as they trudge onwards, fighting against the howling winds.
Soon enough, the shadow Cain had glimpsed resolves itself into a smudge against the whiteout, and then, soon, a ramshackle log cabin, tilted but still upright. (There may or may not be only one blanket to be found inside.)
Cain taps Vane's shoulder to get his attention, pointing to it with a relieved grin. ]
Let's hope this means luck is on our side.

he waves the jerky a few times in cain's direction. almost as if to solidify he ... merely had it. before, he quietly pockets it. if anything, this was likely a symbol they were on the right track to something. it meant that people had likely traversed through this tundra, and one would hope ... not too long ago.
but, more than logic. this was simple intuition or a gut feeling on vane's end. one that cain seems to confirm when he first happens upon the sight of the cabin. vane's excitement is probably all too transparent. not that he was trying to conceal it, but still. while the cabin overall appeared rather shabby and worn— it'd definitely do. ... besides with this sort of weather, who could blame it for being a bit worse for wear?
still, at cain's words he gives a firm "you betcha" sort of grin, his free hand giving a solid thumbs up.
when they arrive, he permits cain in first, prying the door open with force. with the cold, it seemed like the lock was frozen in place. still, once inside, he makes sure to shut it and bolt it, keeping the cold air locked away. ] Phew... [ he releases a sigh of relief, as his eyes scan the darkness of the cabin. ]
You should take that blanket there. For now, I'll try and see if we can get some fire going. [ there was a small pen outside meant to house firewood so he could only presume, there's be a fireplace here. ... and a method of getting it going. still, it's here he involuntarily shivers. before, looking back at cain with a lop-sided smile. ] After all, it's still pretty chilly in here too, after all. [ ... ] Ah! Not that I'm complaining!
no subject
As long as there's no monsters nesting in one of the bedroom, at least, but so far, there's not even the skittering footsteps of a mouse, nothing stirring at the sound of their voices.
It should be safe enough, and Cain returns Vane's grin with one of his own as he shakes snow from his hair and clothes. ]
Ha, no need to apologize, it is still cold. [ A problem that Vane has the obvious solution to — but Cain's not about to curl up and let Vane do the work to fix it. ] We should work together to warm things up, though. It'll be faster with two.
[ A fire for the fireplace that Cain discovers as he pokes around deeper in the main room, piled high with ash. And maybe something to block the windows and the crack of the door if they can find any other spare cloth that's not needed as insulation... With how long it's been left abandoned, the cabin is ramshackle enough that there's plenty of chinks letting in the frigid air. ]
no subject
especially, since they weren't exactly .... out of the worst of this yet. which he seems to be all too aware of.
still, he tries to turn a bit more light-hearted. ] Mm! I know the smell of wood is everywhere around here, so there's bound to be— [ some firewood, or so he wants to say, but in the midst of his deep inhalation of breath to get his senses going, he starts coughing from all the... dust.
followed by a swift: ] Achoo! [ there's a small chuckle that follows this. his own way of brushing off ... how dumb that could have potentially been. all the same. he runs to the next room. ... and while normally one wouldn't expect a heap of firewood there. ... there is that. as well as two more thin sheets that was draped over the bed and the chair.
hm.... weird, but he takes all of them. with his arm full of wood and the sheets on top of that, he returns. probably looking kind of ridiculous, but what's new. ]
How's this? Useable? [ honestly, he didn't have the foresight to know what they needed, but he presumed in a situation like this, every supply could mark the difference in survivability. he's been in enough of those kinds (aka, life-threatening) of situations to at least gather that much. ]
no subject
[ A nicety that follows Vane as he scampers off. Hopefully it's just the dust and not the beginning of any aftereffects of the exposure...
Vane looks healthy enough when he returns, at least, carrying his armful of wood and sheets, and Cain offers him a relieved: ]
Good find!
[ Why was there firewood in a bedroom...? It's puzzling, but it's a gift horse Cain isn't inclined to look in the mouth right now. Not when it means they don't have to open the door and let in the blizzard outside again.
For his part, Cain has his sleeves pushed back as he fishes around in the fireplace, leaning over, arm bent awkwardly as he searches for the flue. He finds it and gives it a good yank, leaping backwards as a cloud of ash comes billowing out with the flue's opening. ]
Ugh. [ He dusts at his clothes (turning damp as his body heat melts the snowfrom them) a bit futilely, but at least the worst of the ash has settled and they won't be suffocating to death while they try to get warm. ] Well, it'll at least get us a fire even if it's no royal treatment.
no subject
... and it seems like cain agrees to this decision. when cain seems to be clearing out the space beneath the chimney, vane himself is p. watchful. as if... he were almost expecting that cloud of smoke that surfaces soon after. it's dusty with ash and small fractions of wood chips, and so soon, he finds himself giving an involuntary swing of his arm. that is, before he leans in closer. ] ... you okay? [ vane helps a bit. dusting him off with a smile. ]
I'm used to being on the road so this isn't too bad. [ but, while vane starts prepping the wood in it's place, he feels the imminent chill still present in the room. oh right! the cracks of the door. he stops mid-task, as he gets up to seal those up. stuffing the rounds of cloth there.
when he's done, he returns back, a bit of an apologetic smile for leaving cain alone to tend to the fire. ] How's it looking?
no subject
[ He does, even if it's just a minor effect from not being out in the raging winds and with the prospect of a fire to look forward to. While Vane was busy stuffing the cracks, Cain's gotten the wood layed out in the grating, and he's even managed to find a dusty box of matches tucked on top of the mantel.
A few moments more and he has a match struck and the fire carefully coaxed to life. ]
Was that all the wood?
[ If there's more, he can build the fire a bit bigger, but if not, they're going to have to ration their fuel through the night. ]
no subject
that is until he recalls a certain point! the blanket from earlier, that is, and it's here he swiftly moves to drape it over cain's shoulders. he assumes it was safe to prioritize his companion in this way. if anything, vane presumed his own body would be durable enough to adapt even without it. teeth chattering aside, he gives cain a smile.... as he does like 10 jumping jacks. ]
I am also warmer!!
no subject
Without preamble, Cain reaches out to snag Vane's sleeve, tugging him off balance, hopefully enough to get him to stop his efforts. ]
And you'll wear yourself out like that. We need to conserve energy, so come sit down and we can share.
no subject
hence, vane eventually stops jumping, gradually bringing his arms down. it's here, he gives a small hint of a sheepish smile, before giving a nod. ] ... I guess you're right. Looks like this place hasn't got much food either.
Unless you wanna split the jerky? [ he says mostly in jest. ... probably. that is, before he plops down beside cain. ]
no subject
[ A wry comment as Cain holds up half the blanket, waiting for Vane to sit down so he can drape it over Vane's shoulders as well as his own. The jerky, as far as he's concerned, is an absolute last resort. Hopefully they can rest for the night and the storm will have died down enough to at least find their way in the morning. Better not to risk whatever might blight them from an incautious bite of who-knows-how-old meat. ]
no subject
it isn't like he doubted either of their abilities to be resourceful and figure out a way around this, but well, it good to know they were now in some sort of safety net of collective comfort or warmth. however, temporary. still, it's in moments like these that his hunger seems to really catch up to him. but, vane does his best to bear with it. first by distracting himself. he reaches his hand to touch cain's forearm, as if trying to get a feel for his body temperature from touch alone. ]
It's kind of hard to tell, huh? [ after a pause. ] But, you should really rest while the fire is still going.
My [ literal and figurative? ] shoulder is always here for you to lean on too!
no subject
And what about you? If I take you up on that offer, will you wake me up in a few hours for a turn at watch, or are you going to conveniently forget so I can get more rest?
[ He may not have known Vane for very long, but Vane wears his emotions openly. He's easy to read, and Cain can already tell to expect that sort of well-intentioned but ultimately foolish selflessness. ]
no subject
which probably only solidifies cain's inward claims to him being transparent. all the same— ] All right. I'll wake you up if my eyelids are feeling heavy. [ which would probably be in a few hours. vane couldn't stay ... in one place for so long without getting bored, after all. ] How's that?
no subject
But that's just silly.
Still, it doesn't make Vane any less, yes, transparent. ]
Three hours. And then you wake me up even if your eyelids aren't heavy, got it?
