Without another word about it, he backs up to give himself a running start and then races toward one of the trees, kicking off of the trunk and then propelling himself up to grab onto the lowest branch and pull himself up. After that, it takes another few well-aimed jumps to get high enough that he feels like he'll be safe from the oncoming avalanche's path.
