Not religious power, magical and political. My gods... they turned out to be as mortal as anyone in their time, and happy to take advantage of those who worshiped them for their own gain. Command the masses to fight in your wars, ask them to give their lives over to magical experiments.

Thunder? Could be god of anything and you decide on just thunder? How's that work?
