From what Jon Snow told me, he was released from his vows after his black brothers betrayed him and left him for dead. Melisandre used her magic to return him to life, and given all we have seen and heard, I have little reason to doubt his story.

[ a sigh. ]

Should you see him, he may be familiar with you. Though he remains infuriating at times, I do not doubt his honour either.

Jon Snow said there was no reason for him to do so, yet he did all the same. It seems as though he was content in marching all of his men south, including you and Melisandre.
