[There's something familiar about this pattern. An opening for genuine conversation, turned away from in favor of something easier. Still communal, maybe, but less sincere. Less dangerous. That's how Enforcers operate, isn't it? Masaoka's certainly done it often enough. Even if they're no longer literally isolated, by government protocol or personal habit they still end up alone.
