Jean Valjean, however, merely listens. It is a skill he had had to acquire and practice, much like reading and writing, or anything else a man might set his mind to.]

It may be true that life is immeasurably cruel. But so too can God be immeasurably forgiving.

[He has known both extremes, both the darkest hateful night and the brightest blessed day.]

Where we will be brought is not their home, but it is a chance for a new beginning.

[In the looming shadows of his thoughts, however, he too balks at beginning anew (once more) without Cosette at his elbow. Yet above all he remains grateful that he might at least have the chance to complete his work.]
