He chuckled under his breath, the last of it stolen away by her. He had forgotten what it was for a tender expression to settle on his features, for too long he had been hard and stern. Now, with her here, he can feel his eyes soften and his smile emerge from the recesses of his heart. "I bent the knee, your grace. I'm no longer king."
He hadn't been certain of the position among the Royal Guard at first, but he had grown prouder of it. He accomplished the things he wanted to in the Night's Guard. It felt like there was real honor and more men he was glad to serve alongside. It wasn't a rare handful as his friends had been.
