❪ test drive #4 ❫

YOUR STORY BEGINS

The Storm came. You only remember darkness, but you don't remember much after that.

All you know, perhaps, is that it was cold. You don't know for how long you slept, but the dreams were short, at least. You remember the expanse of stars and the universe that came in view. Every world and solar system ever known was displayed in your dreams in careful, pristine detail. You have also witnessed The Storm, which has devoured a fair portion of these galaxies. It was a dark, thick smog — ominous in appearance and ever foreboding.

Your Earth and similar planets were immersed in The Storm. Somehow, you knew it would be the last you'd see of it. That was when she told you what happened, and how you could help. You knew that you'd be living somewhere new, even though you never asked for it. The details here weren't clear, but you knew you'd made a deal with Darma.

Not long after, you'll wake at Thesa Station — your body is still cold.

It all felt like a dream, but somehow, you knew it wasn't — now, will you keep that promise you made to Darma?
PROMPT: THE STORM

CW: death
You were awake on Thesa Station. But at some point you, like many other new arrivals before you, wandered into the Observation Deck. Ordinarily, this is where images of The Storm are replayed to remind Refugees of the fate they have escaped.

The Natha Orbiters' technology has evolved. They are aware of your gaps in memory. You may have doubts of The Storm even existing, or of your world's destruction. Though they do not wish reliving those last moments on anyone, they have created an experience that will do just that. Before entering the Observation Deck, you are warned that what follows will not be for the weak of heart. As soon as you step in, you will find that the walls around you begin to transform and expand.

Welcome to the Planet Cespi, in the Circinus Galaxy. Unfortunately, we were not able to save this world from The Storm's Consumption. These are its last memories.

You are surrounded by blue, grassy hills as far as the eye can see and a pleasant breeze. The atmosphere is thick with a sickly sweet smell. Before you lays the scene of a quiet village, with its residents going about their everyday lives. You aren't alone, either, with an equally confused stranger (or perhaps you know each other?) surveying the scene.

Then the world grows completely silent for a full minute. You and your partner are unable to make a sound, verbal or otherwise. Without warning, a deafening roar fills your ears and forces you to double over in pain. The villagers run out of their homes in a panic, finding themselves in just as much pain and confusion as you do. Where there was no sound before, now there is too much for a normal human body to process.

Look up. An expanding mass of energy is swallowing everything you can see. It consumes the earth, the atmosphere, the depths of space — and it is getting closer.

Your only hope is to outrun it, if you can. The people in the village certainly try to, racing past you. Their fear is very real. Their bodies are very real. You may be able to run from it for a time, only able to catch glimpses of this dark and sinister force swallowing everything and everyone. The earth rumbles and separates beneath you. Electricity surges through the sky, and then through your very body.

You fought hard, but it is impossible to outrun the Storm forever. You too will be consumed. Your death is quick, but not painless. What were you thinking, before you took your last breath?

You awaken back in the Observation Deck, next to your new friend.
PROMPT: TRAINING MODULES

While it’s all nice and well to familiarize oneself with Thesa Station, it is most advised that new arrivals venture out a bit. Not physically. No one is quite prepared for that yet. However, there will be several virtual reality training programs set for those who dare to be adventurous. For those who aren’t and don’t dare, well — good luck, all the same. Once seated and appropriately strapped in, the system will automatically whir to life.

1. When you enter the Natha's newest program, at first nothing loads. You might think this is an error as you look around in apparent total darkness, only able to see your own virtual body if you look down, but soon enough a voice comes to life as if speakers have turned on somewhere.

Long ago, the lands of El Nysa were dominated by the ancestors of the dragons who now live among the people, tamed. It was pretty dangerous! How about a little history lesson?
And then the simulation comes to life—

a. The lush lands that blossom to life around you all at once are real enough to make you forget you're in a simulation — at least for a moment. Those refugees who have been to the planet in reality before will find themselves in territory as unfamiliar as those who are brand new, as this simulation takes place far back in history. Instead of sprawling cities and civilizations, the most you'll find is scattered villages, many of them no more than nomadic campsites at best. You've been outfitted to blend in with the natives and these simulated people won't react to you as a newcomer, but as a member of their village. Are you a doctor, or perhaps a warrior? Maybe you're even in charge! But they want your help, and they want it quickly: a dragon is coming.

The dragon is larger than the mount-sized breeds that exist on El Nysa today — much larger. It's a good six stories in height, bestial, and angry. Maybe it's then that you notice the lands that surround you are littered with scars of scorched earth, some of them several yards across, and there's a reason these people don't live in one place for very long. But don't linger too long on the makeshift grave markers sticking out of the burnt countryside — the dragon is coming.

b. If you're looking for something a little less violent, perhaps another area of the historic simulation will be up your alley. This one finds you on a cliffside, waiting among other villagers for an event the people are talking about in hushed whispers, some of which you can identify as prayer. When the white dragon raises its head up from the depths of the ravine, towering impossibly high over you and the others on the cliffside, it's no wonder most of the natives fall to their knees in awe and wonder. This dragon doesn't attack, only looks at the people on land with an ancient and strange wisdom.

Then it speaks. Not in words, but the low rumbling sound that starts in its throat and becomes a full trumpeting bellow to the sky seems to have meaning, and somehow, you can understand its cry as it entreats the people to praise and worship. The natives around you are already starting to give offerings with their prayers, food and carvings and — blood? Is that someone's arm being offered up?

That's different.

2. Let us now travel forward in time, shall we?

a. The Olympian settlement around you is quiet — until the screaming starts.

Guerilla fighters from Wyver flood the streets, knocking civilians aside and breaking down doors and windows when they find their way barred. They move methodically, advancing toward the nicer parts of town where the politicians reside and leaving terror in their wake.

They're here for the politicians, people say. They're here to punish the people who made the decision to advance into Wyver in the first place. Blood for blood, as the saying goes. Where they'll be taking them once they have them is anyone's guess. A soldier emerges from a building, dragging someone in elegant clothing out by the hair. Looks like they've found one.

Will you rescue them? Make a run for it yourself, lest you be mistaken for one of their targets? Or maybe they've already caught you and some other unfortunate Refugee who's been dropped into this simulation, and the two of you need to figure out a way to escape.

b. CW: branding
You find yourself in the midst of a bustling crowd gathered at the Temple of Thesa. Robed acolytes stoke fires on either side of the altar at the front of the temple, where miserable-looking people who seem to be from a village in Wyver await, bound in ropes.

The priest, at the front of the crowd, picks up a metal brand from the altar and gestures for another acolyte to bring a prisoner forward. The crowd watches with interest as the prisoner is forced to kneel in front of the altar, their arm laid out flat on the marble surface.

Another cry — "For the glory of Olympia!" — and the crest of the city is burned into the prisoner's arm.

The crowd cheers, deafening the cries of pain. The priest ushers forward another prisoner, and then another. Is that a familiar face you see in the lineup, thrust into this bit of history by the simulation's whims? You have to do something. Or are you unlucky enough to find yourself bound? ...Well, hopefully someone else in the crowd has more scruples than this priest.
3. And now, the present.

After all those enlightening scenes, the simulation finally brings you to a more quiet area of Olympia. You are deposited out somewhere in The Outlook, a place the very first group of refugees had to trudge through before they found their homes. You've arrived in the early evening — but sunlight is waning, and soon you'll be under a sky full of stars. Luckily, their old campsites aren't too overgrown.

The intention here is to get you familiar with some of the local flora and fauna. What sorts of plants will you encounter? Do you find yourself under a Verillum Tree, suddenly compelled to be painfully honest and truthful in conversation with a complete stranger? Find yourself behaving erratically in the presence of Whistleweed? Or perhaps you'll have to break the spell of being trapped in a Vena Amoris' vines... with a kiss.

PROMPT: STASIS UNIT

You have found the massive section of Thesa known as the Stasis Unit. There’s no special access required to enter this part of Thesa Station, but refugees are warned that it may not be for the faint of heart. Here, in large pods that nearly cover every square inch of the space, are all of the people the Orbiters have managed to rescue. Your loved ones, your greatest enemy, your next door neighbor — you might find them here. These people are in a state of deep cryosleep. Due to the damaging effects of The Storm, their bodies are not yet ready to be awoken.

PROMPT: OMAGE
Upon receiving your mobile phone, you will be asked to set a username. Voila, you can now access the network! You can choose to send a message to the entire network, specific usernames, or you can try out the Orbiters’ service, Omage, which connects you to a random user. They thought this might be a good way for their new guests to make friends with each other...

He looks pretty shocked and unsure of how to deal with the situation when Keaton grabs him like that — it's not every day you get awkwardly carried by a dog boy. He supposes it's the better option between this and floating away, but that also does not mean he needs to enjoy it.

At least the rock can be his savior. ]

A-Aye.

[ If Rin is taken aback by what Yukio says, he barely shows it, just furrowing his brow and becoming more determined to approach the other. No, he would face this head on, even if Yukio gave him warning signs of wanting distance. He's had a lot of time to think about things between them, and he isn't going to be scared off so easily. ]

What're ya talking about? Course I'm gonna check up on ya...

[ We're family, is left unsaid. Maybe he's just extra grumpy since he's still defrosting? He knew he couldn't crack the obvious elephant in the room right after speaking with him, so he just fiddles with the strap that kept the Kurikara on his back, shifting his weight to one side once he deemed himself near enough to his brother to check if he was okay. ]

Ya don't know how long it's been since I've seen ya around 'n walking. [ His concern for his little brother's health outweighs his worry about their relationship - because underneath how tense everything clearly is considering Yukio's reaction to him, he can't deny that he is quite relieved to see his brother alive in some sense again. So he keeps on his casual tone, regardless of how serious the other seems: ] Mephisto kept frickin' joking I'd be an old man before you or anyone else woke up...

[ That alone is enough to suggest it's been quite a while since Rin had seen him up and walking. ]

Yer okay 'n everything, right? Yer not still frosty from the pod?

He had never done this before, offering a woman so much open affection that others couldn't help but notice. While he had a lover once before and Melisandre's attention, neither of those encounters had prepared him for something like this. He had tried to put his duty first, focusing on the Night King and everything that needed to be done to secure both Cersei and Dany's support. But after the events beyond the Wall, putting this off and ignoring it no longer seemed possible. She was inevitable for him and everything inside him hummed with anticipation. She rooted him in a way he had never experienced until now and occupied every inch of him.

He thinks back to the woman he saw in the throne room at Dragonstone, how severe and cold she was. He didn't know what to think of her, but it was never something like this. Seeing that vulnerability and tenderness on her features had changed everything, now he never wanted to be without it. Just a simple touch, the feel of her gloved hand against her skin makes his breath hitch.

"That doesn't matter." Never to him and never to the people she inspired. "You're still queen and I am still sworn to you." He had told her before that even without her dragons, she was different than the rest. She was still extraordinary.

He smiled shyly, looking nothing more than a boy beside her. "It must have taken some time for her to memorize it." He had been impetuous in using that name, enough that he didn't blame her for brushing its use aside. So it was a surprise to hear her offer it to him now. He gazes down at her, watching as the light danced in her, mesmerized by her presence. In a low voice, he murmured her name. "Dany."

[Atsushi looks up at that, wide-eyed. He hadn't expected Chuuya to be so adamant about not fighting for either of the cities; if anything, Atsushi had been worried that Chuuya would do just that, and so tip the balance of any war to come. (And yet, would Atsushi have been so worried if he was convinced that Chuuya would fight on "his" side? He can't honestly be sure. War makes everyone a hypocrite, he thinks.)]

I haven't. That is: -...

[It's a lie, isn't it? Even if he doesn't want to fight, even if he wants to avoid war if at all possible, he's picked a side whether he wants to face it or not.]

I live in Olympia. If the city ends up under attack, I will defend it... but I'd rather try to avoid war altogether.

Not that there's a lot I can do.

[He's just one guy, without the power and influence of an organization like the Armed Detective Agency, and even without the cunning and intellect of someone like Dazai. He used to be doing just fine, never accomplishing anything and being totally helpless. But now... After everything he's done with the Armed Detective Agency, going back to that helplessness is incredibly frustrating.

He'd been fine when the planet had seemed at peace, and he was managing to build a simple but happy life for himself, entirely on his own strength. But with war on the horizon, not being able to go that extra mile is torment.]

[ The question earns a pause and she chews thoughtfully on a few fries as she mulls it over. ]

I've wondered the same. I haven't heard of it happening, but that doesn't mean it hasn't. I don't know what the consequences would be, but — [ She shrugs one shoulder then takes a bite of her cheeseburger, only bothering to chew a few times before talking around the mouthful. #ladylike ] The Natha keep a close watch on things. If they can wake us up, it stands to reason they can put us back to sleep. [ She swallows, swipes a thumb on the edge of her mouth to flick away a sesame seed. ] Friends of mine have returned to stasis without warning; some come back, some haven't.

[ Claire Fraser disappeared for three days and returned to them, albeit with twenty years' worth of new memories. Edmund Pevensie, on the other hand, returned to his pod and hasn't come back since. And he'd been old hat at this "new world" business, she doubts he'd have said anything to draw attention. ]

But they aren't the type to tell the Nysans about all of this, so that remains a mystery. Of course, it's in everyone's best interests that we stay as under the radar as possible. There's bad blood between the north and south and it seems we're about to be caught in the middle of it, whether we want to be or not.

Hah?

[Chuuya completely understands wanting to defend his home, and he doesn’t fault Atsushi for that in the slightest. It’s not the same as taking sides in a war, obviously; more like self-defense, which is almost always justified. No, Chuuya doesn’t blame him for that at all; what gets that confused reaction out of him is Atsushi’s declaration of supposed helplessness. He’s not here to give anyone butt pats about themselves or stroke their ego, of course, it’s just that he’s genuinely baffled about why Atsushi would say that.]

What, did you lose your ability to turn into a weretiger or something? What do you mean there’s not a lot you can do?

[Chuuya downs the rest of his wine before cutting his eyes back to Atsushi, a rather intense look reflected in their depths.]

You’ve got the power and the strength to do whatever you want. I know because you’re the one who gave the Port Mafia such fucking trouble. So what’s the deal? Do you need help finding your balls or something?

A year?

[Sora looks vaguely horrified and gives his friend another good, long, hard look. This is definitely weird. If he'd been wearing it for a year then that would explain why his hair's got so long again, but- why would he go back to the coat. And wouldn't he be taller still? ]

You mean I've been asleep in there for a whole year? Geez, I've got to stop doing that! And after you went to all that trouble to wake me up, too.

[It's probably not good for him to be sleeping so much, maybe it'll stunt his growth. But- oh wow, wait a second. If he's been out for a whole year... oh that's not good. That's really not good.

Master Xehanort outnumbered them as it was, even though they'd managed to hold him off from getting his hands on another vessel (and Sora still gets the heebie-jeebies just thinking about what would have happened if he'd succeeded), that didn't make him any less dangerous. They were going to have to do all sorts of dangerous things just to try and level the playing field and to be down a Keybearer for a year-

Oh no.

The storm. Devouring worlds. Sora's lived through all this before, it just had another name.]

[Jumping Jiminy Crickets, what did he run into, a wall? Talk about unstoppable forced meeting immovable object. Did he just run into a tree? It definitely felt like a tree. Sora laughs, because it sure would be dumb of him to go chasing glowing butterflies, run into a tree and then go apologising to it, and then the laughter stops abruptly as he looks up and takes in just who or what he ran into.

It's not a tree. It's a suit of armour.

And it's a suit of armour he recognises.

A Keyblade...
Who are you...?
I can feel it. We've met before. When--
No...
It isn't you...
You're not the one I chose...
Why are you not him?
Xe...ha...nort--
Is that you?
Xeha...nort...
Xehanort!

They'd said the training modules were supposed to acclimate him to being there, that there would be challenges, but this is definitely not the sort of challenge he was expecting to face. It was enough of a challenge the first time, when it was real and it hit really, really hard!

Sora's eyes widen and he scoots backwards, grip tightening on his Keyblade before he vaults back up to his feet and takes on a defensive stance, but he's not about to attack. He knows who Xehanort is now, knows why the suit of armour would want to pummel him (and the feeling is more than mutual to be honest; Xehanort tried to take over his body! It that wouldn't make someone want to pummel him, what would?), but Sora's going to try reasoning with the armour first, before he tries to flatten him. It was tough enough engaging this guy with Donald and Goofy fighting alongside him, he really really doesn't want to have to go through round two on his own.]

Wait, hold on! I'm not Xehanort, I promise!

[...well, he almost was but the armour doesn't need to know about that part. He might not believe him when he tells him that he got away.

...can animated suits of armour be sceptical? Sora doesn't know but he doesn't want to try his luck.]

[If Atsushi's eyes had widened, before, they positively turn as big as saucers now. He doesn't understand... Why would Chuuya say that? Not only does it come out suspiciously like a compliment, even with that attitude, but... did Atsushi really give the Port Mafia so much trouble - enough that an executive was aware of it? Surely that was the Armed Detective Agency in general, not Atsushi personally? He's never considered much of anything he did in the ADA a personal achievement, even though he's always thought of his failures as purely his own.

The funny thing is, Atsushi doesn't doubt Chuuya when he says what he says. It's exactly because Chuuya has no other reason to know those things, let alone say them, that Atsushi can't dismiss the compliment as an exaggeration at best, and that makes it come as quite the shock - enough of one that Atsushi all but forgets to argue against it.]

There are more brands sitting hot in their coals to be used still.

And Cam's only halfway through the line. At this point, he summons his persona full-tilt, a howling swirl of ice driving back these would-be prelates again—
