❪ test drive #4 ❫

YOUR STORY BEGINS

The Storm came. You only remember darkness, but you don't remember much after that.

All you know, perhaps, is that it was cold. You don't know for how long you slept, but the dreams were short, at least. You remember the expanse of stars and the universe that came in view. Every world and solar system ever known was displayed in your dreams in careful, pristine detail. You have also witnessed The Storm, which has devoured a fair portion of these galaxies. It was a dark, thick smog — ominous in appearance and ever foreboding.

Your Earth and similar planets were immersed in The Storm. Somehow, you knew it would be the last you'd see of it. That was when she told you what happened, and how you could help. You knew that you'd be living somewhere new, even though you never asked for it. The details here weren't clear, but you knew you'd made a deal with Darma.

Not long after, you'll wake at Thesa Station — your body is still cold.

It all felt like a dream, but somehow, you knew it wasn't — now, will you keep that promise you made to Darma?
PROMPT: THE STORM

CW: death
You were awake on Thesa Station. But at some point you, like many other new arrivals before you, wandered into the Observation Deck. Ordinarily, this is where images of The Storm are replayed to remind Refugees of the fate they have escaped.

The Natha Orbiters' technology has evolved. They are aware of your gaps in memory. You may have doubts of The Storm even existing, or of your world's destruction. Though they do not wish reliving those last moments on anyone, they have created an experience that will do just that. Before entering the Observation Deck, you are warned that what follows will not be for the weak of heart. As soon as you step in, you will find that the walls around you begin to transform and expand.

Welcome to the Planet Cespi, in the Circinus Galaxy. Unfortunately, we were not able to save this world from The Storm's Consumption. These are its last memories.

You are surrounded by blue, grassy hills as far as the eye can see and a pleasant breeze. The atmosphere is thick with a sickly sweet smell. Before you lays the scene of a quiet village, with its residents going about their everyday lives. You aren't alone, either, with an equally confused stranger (or perhaps you know each other?) surveying the scene.

Then the world grows completely silent for a full minute. You and your partner are unable to make a sound, verbal or otherwise. Without warning, a deafening roar fills your ears and forces you to double over in pain. The villagers run out of their homes in a panic, finding themselves in just as much pain and confusion as you do. Where there was no sound before, now there is too much for a normal human body to process.

Look up. An expanding mass of energy is swallowing everything you can see. It consumes the earth, the atmosphere, the depths of space — and it is getting closer.

Your only hope is to outrun it, if you can. The people in the village certainly try to, racing past you. Their fear is very real. Their bodies are very real. You may be able to run from it for a time, only able to catch glimpses of this dark and sinister force swallowing everything and everyone. The earth rumbles and separates beneath you. Electricity surges through the sky, and then through your very body.

You fought hard, but it is impossible to outrun the Storm forever. You too will be consumed. Your death is quick, but not painless. What were you thinking, before you took your last breath?

You awaken back in the Observation Deck, next to your new friend.
PROMPT: TRAINING MODULES

While it’s all nice and well to familiarize oneself with Thesa Station, it is most advised that new arrivals venture out a bit. Not physically. No one is quite prepared for that yet. However, there will be several virtual reality training programs set for those who dare to be adventurous. For those who aren’t and don’t dare, well — good luck, all the same. Once seated and appropriately strapped in, the system will automatically whir to life.

1. When you enter the Natha's newest program, at first nothing loads. You might think this is an error as you look around in apparent total darkness, only able to see your own virtual body if you look down, but soon enough a voice comes to life as if speakers have turned on somewhere.

Long ago, the lands of El Nysa were dominated by the ancestors of the dragons who now live among the people, tamed. It was pretty dangerous! How about a little history lesson?
And then the simulation comes to life—

a. The lush lands that blossom to life around you all at once are real enough to make you forget you're in a simulation — at least for a moment. Those refugees who have been to the planet in reality before will find themselves in territory as unfamiliar as those who are brand new, as this simulation takes place far back in history. Instead of sprawling cities and civilizations, the most you'll find is scattered villages, many of them no more than nomadic campsites at best. You've been outfitted to blend in with the natives and these simulated people won't react to you as a newcomer, but as a member of their village. Are you a doctor, or perhaps a warrior? Maybe you're even in charge! But they want your help, and they want it quickly: a dragon is coming.

The dragon is larger than the mount-sized breeds that exist on El Nysa today — much larger. It's a good six stories in height, bestial, and angry. Maybe it's then that you notice the lands that surround you are littered with scars of scorched earth, some of them several yards across, and there's a reason these people don't live in one place for very long. But don't linger too long on the makeshift grave markers sticking out of the burnt countryside — the dragon is coming.

b. If you're looking for something a little less violent, perhaps another area of the historic simulation will be up your alley. This one finds you on a cliffside, waiting among other villagers for an event the people are talking about in hushed whispers, some of which you can identify as prayer. When the white dragon raises its head up from the depths of the ravine, towering impossibly high over you and the others on the cliffside, it's no wonder most of the natives fall to their knees in awe and wonder. This dragon doesn't attack, only looks at the people on land with an ancient and strange wisdom.

Then it speaks. Not in words, but the low rumbling sound that starts in its throat and becomes a full trumpeting bellow to the sky seems to have meaning, and somehow, you can understand its cry as it entreats the people to praise and worship. The natives around you are already starting to give offerings with their prayers, food and carvings and — blood? Is that someone's arm being offered up?

That's different.

2. Let us now travel forward in time, shall we?

a. The Olympian settlement around you is quiet — until the screaming starts.

Guerilla fighters from Wyver flood the streets, knocking civilians aside and breaking down doors and windows when they find their way barred. They move methodically, advancing toward the nicer parts of town where the politicians reside and leaving terror in their wake.

They're here for the politicians, people say. They're here to punish the people who made the decision to advance into Wyver in the first place. Blood for blood, as the saying goes. Where they'll be taking them once they have them is anyone's guess. A soldier emerges from a building, dragging someone in elegant clothing out by the hair. Looks like they've found one.

Will you rescue them? Make a run for it yourself, lest you be mistaken for one of their targets? Or maybe they've already caught you and some other unfortunate Refugee who's been dropped into this simulation, and the two of you need to figure out a way to escape.

b. CW: branding
You find yourself in the midst of a bustling crowd gathered at the Temple of Thesa. Robed acolytes stoke fires on either side of the altar at the front of the temple, where miserable-looking people who seem to be from a village in Wyver await, bound in ropes.

The priest, at the front of the crowd, picks up a metal brand from the altar and gestures for another acolyte to bring a prisoner forward. The crowd watches with interest as the prisoner is forced to kneel in front of the altar, their arm laid out flat on the marble surface.

Another cry — "For the glory of Olympia!" — and the crest of the city is burned into the prisoner's arm.

The crowd cheers, deafening the cries of pain. The priest ushers forward another prisoner, and then another. Is that a familiar face you see in the lineup, thrust into this bit of history by the simulation's whims? You have to do something. Or are you unlucky enough to find yourself bound? ...Well, hopefully someone else in the crowd has more scruples than this priest.
3. And now, the present.

After all those enlightening scenes, the simulation finally brings you to a more quiet area of Olympia. You are deposited out somewhere in The Outlook, a place the very first group of refugees had to trudge through before they found their homes. You've arrived in the early evening — but sunlight is waning, and soon you'll be under a sky full of stars. Luckily, their old campsites aren't too overgrown.

The intention here is to get you familiar with some of the local flora and fauna. What sorts of plants will you encounter? Do you find yourself under a Verillum Tree, suddenly compelled to be painfully honest and truthful in conversation with a complete stranger? Find yourself behaving erratically in the presence of Whistleweed? Or perhaps you'll have to break the spell of being trapped in a Vena Amoris' vines... with a kiss.

PROMPT: STASIS UNIT

You have found the massive section of Thesa known as the Stasis Unit. There’s no special access required to enter this part of Thesa Station, but refugees are warned that it may not be for the faint of heart. Here, in large pods that nearly cover every square inch of the space, are all of the people the Orbiters have managed to rescue. Your loved ones, your greatest enemy, your next door neighbor — you might find them here. These people are in a state of deep cryosleep. Due to the damaging effects of The Storm, their bodies are not yet ready to be awoken.

PROMPT: OMAGE
Upon receiving your mobile phone, you will be asked to set a username. Voila, you can now access the network! You can choose to send a message to the entire network, specific usernames, or you can try out the Orbiters’ service, Omage, which connects you to a random user. They thought this might be a good way for their new guests to make friends with each other...

[ A good question indeed. The men are coming toward the corner they're hiding behind, passing any of the doors near them, so he has enough reason to believe they're going to keep coming. Which leaves his options clear — either they fight, or they find a way to avoid it, and he would certainly prefer the latter.

Putting a hand to his chin, he thinks on the situation for a moment, before getting an idea. And thus he turns to his sister, whispering softly. ]

Alisaie. You are capable of binding others, are you not?

[ He's almost certain she is, but he'd prefer to check. ]

You're a flaming train wreck.

[In his books, that wasn't a bad thing either. He happened to like most of his team being dedicated flaming train wrecks, especially when there could be all manner of violence brewing underneath those calm exteriors. No pain, no gain after all.

Rumlow knew how to fight in close quarters. It was actually his specialty, and few wanted to get in the ring with him, so he took advantage of size and strength to punch his way into forcing a roll over. He straddled the Weasel in time to have to lean back away from the upper cut. Nice swing though.

Of course, he shifted forward again in an attempt to slam his elbow into Weasel's face.]

I would prefer she not.

[ He feels like it's a 50/50 chance she'd go through with it if it were to be brought up, too.

But moving on from that, apparently his smallness is going to be the bane of his existence here. If only he were like the taller elezen. But no point in lamenting one's body they were born with. He'll get out of this somehow!! Even if it means ... being carried by a stranger or holding a rock. Huh. Actually, that's not a bad idea he has there. Surprisingly. ]

That is ... a surprisingly good idea, Keaton. Quickly, procure me a rock. Mayhap the extra weight will keep me firmly on the ground until this situation can be fully taken care of.

[ He'd get a rock himself, but he's having enough trouble trying to keep himself close to the ground. He's mostly down, but for that last push, he needs something heavy. ]

[ He smiles hearing her say those things. He hasn't stopped crying, but hearing that she's learned of what happened (whoever told her it) makes him ... happy. It was what she wanted, after all.

Quietly, speaking through the tears. ]
... Would that you could have seen it. [ He wished so much at the time that she could have seen what was happening. And though things remained rocky for a while, they're at least moving in the right direction. But, of course, from here, she can't see any of it.

And then he shakes his head a little. ]
You succeeded along with us. You are full deserving of that pride as well.

[ Everything she contributed was important, and though she was not able to see the end of their struggles, she deserves to know that she was just as much a part of it as anyone else. ]

[ He smiles at that. ]

'Twould be difficult to doubt if she had done that. [ He knows his sister's willpower, and he's sure if she wanted to, she could very much teach herself to wield a blade. At least to a certain extent. ]

I should be glad to see her as well. She is safe here, I assume?

[ Just making sure she's okay!! It's basically his brotherly duty. And it's not like he's seen her since before he fell asleep. ]

Wait'll you see it in action before you say that!

[As if he's not flattered. Oh, he is. Cu has plenty of ego himself, in his own way, and this whole situation is just making him want to show off—well, when doesn't he?

It's pretty obvious he's a Lancer, in the same way it'd be obvious he was a Saber if he whipped out a sword, or an Archer if he whipped out all kinds of weapons that usually aren't bows. But on his part, he can't identify the class of the man next to him quite that easily, and it'd be a good thing to know for possible strategy:]

So, mind telling me what to call you before we take this thing down?

[He's expecting a class name, not a name name, but that's just an assumption coming from a guy who's always watching his own back.]
playingfetch: (you best get ready to die)

SORRY FOR THE WAIT FRIENDO

[personal profile] playingfetch 2018-02-04 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
[Sounds more like a potential drunken future conversation, at some time when Cu's not ready to go for the throat like the dog he is.

But he is. The comment, stupid as it was, was the last straw—and there's some strategy under it too, deep down. He's not about to tell Gilgamesh he's without a Master right now. Maybe finally getting this bloodbath started will be a sufficient distraction. He coils his body like a spring, baring his teeth.]

Stray, is it? I've had enough of this little chat—

[And he launches, spear at the ready to drive out as soon as he's within range, but he knows he's going to have to contend with All That Bullshit in the treasury first.]

[Chuuya hears a crackling of thunder before the sky grows dark, and he glances back just in time to see Nami zap the dragon with a bolt of lightning. Gross, burnt dragon stinks, but hey, the overgrown lizard seems focused on Nami now, and that gives Chuuya just enough time to bolt over to the pile of rubble and activate his ability. His body glows with a red aura, and he bends down to touch the large wooden beam. It immediately levitates in the air, and Chuuya grins.

Hell yeah. Still got it.

Oh. Oh shit. He took too long, and now Nami is screaming. Time to move!
]

DUCK!!

[The dragon lodging its jaw into the ground gives Chuuya just enough time to put every ounce of strength behind his ability and launch the wooden beam straight at the dragons head. It flies through the air with terrifying speed, and the sharpened edge pierces right through the dragons skull with ease. The beast lets out a shrill cry, twitches a few times, and then falls into a heap, lifeless.

It’s brutal, and there’s a mess of steaming hot blood everywhere, but it was them or the dragon, so...

He sprints up to Nami, made nearly weightless by his ability, and helps her to her feet. He shouldn’t be smirking, but he is. Hell yeah, he just earned himself the title of (virtual) dragon slayer!

They make polite conversation for a few minutes, Akira giving him a handful of quick pointers to the station (whatever he can remember, it's been awhile since he's beamed himself up here) before they part ways. As he walks away, he points his fingers to his eyes, to Fred. ]

C-couple... [ "couple." it's a funny feeling hearing that word in this context. it's kind of ticklish and he feels himself tense up a little, if only to become a little sheepish at how conscious he is of the term. instead, he opts on clearing his throat. then, focusing on the tie in her hand. ] Er—

[ except,

then she says "it'll look good on you." it's rare for him to hear praises like that. then again, he wasn't the type who got dressed up a lot. he gives a small chuckle.

My role is not that of a warrior. [ He readily admits with an eagerness to get that confession out of the way. Having experience in battle as a general, and actually specializing in the art of battle… these are two entirely different matters. Practically, he functions as more of a mage. ] Nevertheless, the gifts of Ra are mine to command. I shall employ the power of the sun to strike down this unsightly beast.

[ Answering her question boisterously, Ozymandias paints a picture but does not provide as much detail as he perhaps could. ]

I am also capable of improving your effectiveness in battle with my magecraft. When I do so is up to my discretion.

A private dinner date? [ Ozymandias repeats after her, rolling the syllables in his mouth. At first, he is puzzled by this notion. Thinking the matter through, he starts to believe this is actually a decent idea. He just doesn’t know if she’s serious or not. ]

That was not my intention. I simply desire a meeting between two Servants that share Divinity.

[ Between their intense world-shattering simulation experience and her state of fatigue, she may have not had a chance to notice his own. Either way, he will grant her the opportunity to clarify her wish, because if she’s open to the idea, Ozymandias is about to get very loud, very fast. His voice is already increasing in volume. ]

Nevertheless! If you yearn for a romantic overture, that too can be arranged!
bornofgods: (Default)

[personal profile] bornofgods 2018-02-04 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
[ Another one of Ozymandias’ rather long-winded explanations, this time about how he deduced the gender of the plant, dies in his throat the moment Mordred involuntarily flies face-first in his direction.

He is well aware that he has placed an inordinate amount of unfair blame, mainly born to his own maligned pride, in her direction. This emotional state of his shows little sign of improving right when their faces smack together, not quite landing on the correct target just yet. Of course, this doesn’t hurt either of them by any stretch of the imagination, but it still annoys him. And, it probably annoys her as well.

In a reflexive response, he reaches out to grab her by the shoulder. And if Mordred doesn't manage to swat him away, his grip will be firm. ]

Stay still. [ Ozymandias is using his best commanding tone… while full well knowing that it’s probably not going to work on her. ]

[...heh. Chuuya can appreciate Atsushi talking about Dazai’s suicide attempts in such a casual way; most people freak out and ask a million questions about Dazai’s health and well-being, but Atsushi just seems to treat it like a thing that happens. You know, kinda like that crazy cousin you just have to shake your head at and move along. Except way worse because it’s Dazai.

Chuuya doesn’t, however, understand that soft smile and fond look in Atsushi’s eyes when he talks about the bastard. Did he miss a fucking memo, or does Dazai really have this kid wrapped around his finger, along with the rest of the ADA...?

Whatever. He’s asleep now. Fuck him.

Chuuya isn’t really hungry, but he sure as hell could go for some coffee, or even better, some goddamn booze. He needs a drink after seeing all that.
]

Then let’s go. You’re the tour guide here.

[Chuuya will follow Atsushi to the mess hall, glancing around the station all the while to take in his surroundings.]

He has to laugh warmly. He knows he's a large man and he doesn't mind at all when it's brought up in such a way. Instead he just crosses his arms over his broad chest and keeps his eye on the planet in the viewing window.

"Well, to tell the truth, riding from one kingdom to another is still a long journey, but it's worth it. It's a beautiful world down there with a lot to offer. I just wish that you would have a chance to see it before things get bad." He knows this man has likely just woken, and it's a lot to take in, but Reinhardt doesn't have the heart to let a stranger come down that planet fully unaware. "It looks peaceful up here but there is a war on the horizon."

[Chuuya is willing to believe just about anything at this rate. He’s on a space station after being saved from a world-devouring storm and talking to a vampire; there isn’t much that sounds too far-fetched to believe right now. Plus, he’s well aware that Atsushi exists, though he has no idea where the kid is right now. That’ll be something for him to deal with in the future; for right now, he’s having fun just talking to Reign and learning different things about him.]

[After leading them to the mess hall, Atsushi gets something simple to eat, and some tea. It's all there, whatever Chuuya may want to eat or drink. (Well, not the exact brands, of course, but there sure is booze.) Atsushi may glance over at Chuuya's choice, but he won't say anything. Apart from anything else, Chuuya is an adult, Atsushi is pretty sure - and sleeping in stasis pods probably gives you jetlag.

Settling at a table, Atsushi continues their conversation.]

I do. That is: down on the planet. I work at the Olympia stables, taking care of the animals. That, and I do some odd jobs here and there. I had another job originally, but things happened, and -...

[His expression clouds. He really shouldn't mention this kind of thing in any detail, least of all to the mafia: he doesn't want to encourage Chuuya getting involved in this war. At the same time, he can't hope to keep that a secret either, can he?]

Well, I quit.

You'll find this out sooner or later, but the two major cities down there aren't exactly friendly with each other.

[ It is indeed a bitter pill to swallow. Reinhardt had a rough time with it. He had felt deep guilt over it at first. He had blamed himself for not being able to do more. It's folly, he knows. One man can't stop such a thing, can't even think to try it, but he has his promises and that means he should have at least done more. Even if it amounted to nothing.

But he's learned that he can get past that guilt. There are people below that need a knight, need a shield, need good men like this man before him who prayed. Who is still thanking God instead of being upset or angry or guilt ridden.

He notes how the man's eyes avert towards the door out and he nods, heading towards it to help and open it. ]

Yes. Those that are still sleeping rest there. There are so many sleeping faces. Those who are awake, they eventually travel below. There, we live our lives, trying to make our way in this new world we've been given.

Would you like to go there? I have...someone special there... and after seeing that, I need to see her. And I can help you seek whoever you wish to find. It's the least I can do.

Chuuya's offer was well appreciated, noted by the grin on Reign's face. ]

Of course! I'll definitely keep you in mind, and if you ever need help, I'll be there for you.

[ Chuuya was right. What had happened had already happen, and it was best to focus on the here and now, to do what they could for the future. He waved towards the exit of the simulation room. ]

[ For a moment, Reinhardt glances back, concern evident. He hadn't been able to stop that fire as well as he should have. He misses his real shield. He feels a little guilty that he hasn't lived up to his potential in keeping the mage safe. But his concern soon morphs into gleeful delight.

The killing blow? This man is giving him such a grand honor as this! His worried expression turns positively gleeful. It's like he's been gifted the greatest present in the world. It doesn't matter than this dragon isn't real. Reinhardt has slain many an imaginary beast in his years. This one is just a lot more solid and real than the figments of his mind, superimposed upon other things. ]

THANK YOU, MY PHAROH! [ After all, the man had called himself pharoh, right? So, since titles matter and he's being hailed as Knight, it's only proper to do the same.

Thus, he rushes forward one more time. It's almost a charge, though not quite the speed it would be in his proper armor. The hammer comes up halfway through and while it's not his Ultimate, the blow he lands is something that would shatter the mightiest omnic into many pieces.]
JUSTICE BE DONE!!

[ Should the blow land and kill the beast, he knows the simulation will slowly fade out, leaving them in a blank room, no longer a knight and a pharoh, but an old worn out warrior and...well, still a pharoh. ]

[ Mildly, ]

I wouldn't expect anything less.

[ From a Stark. Perhaps that's the delicate thing. Howard is a difficult man to love but she does care for him deeply, as one of the friends she has who's always believed in her. The expectation of the name is there, though. And she's seen the weight of it in flashes and never for very long. A conversation for another time. ]

I haven't, [ she adds. Met a US president, she means. Not by her age or the year she's from; not yet. ] Then again, I don't see the merit in it. If anything, that's always been Steve's place, the poor man. [ The spotlight loves Captain America, not the soldier behind the shield. ] Why don't we leave your tinkering for later and have something to eat? God knows how long any of us have really been asleep and I'm sure you're starving.
