Waking from this false life was indeed going to be damning. Not just for the fact that he'll learn the hard truth of his friend's being alive all these years, but because he'll also learn that his world, their world, is gone. And while Reinhardt hasn't the sort of power to have stopped such a catastrophic event, he will still blame himself for being unable to protect the people just as he blamed himself for not being with the Crusaders at Eichenwalde and for not being there when the Swiss Headquarters exploded, killing two of the best men he had ever had the honor of knowing. It will be a bitter pill to swallow to know that once more, his shield hadn't been enough when it was needed the most. But that is still to come. There is still time in which he gets to live this dream.
He can still smile and laugh with all his heart a little while longer, amused at how the smaller man speaks and how well they seem to travel. With this help, he knows they'll make it back in record time. Yet he still pauses to look over his shoulder with that huge warm smile. "It is true that a carpenter can find work anywhere, but here is where I should be. These people here need me more. They need shelter more. The winters here are harsh and it is an honor to be able to build the walls that will protect families from the bite of it. Even if I can only shelter a few this season, that is a few more than last season."
The campsite in indeed quickly coming into view. He calls out towards it. "Reinhardt Wilhelm and...friend. Coming back with more lumber!" Because this way the people know it isn't some bandit coming in. But the closer he seems to get, the more clarity seems to come to his single eye.
