His unwavering optimism had helped them through some of the darker points of the Crisis, and his bickering with Torbjörn had allowed them to laugh even when everything around them was looking bleak.
But those days are long gone, for both of them, and Jack doesn't expect that to change, even if everything around them is different and the world they knew — and fought for — no longer exists.
